Well, I'll assume you have removed the distributor bolt and hold down. Does it just not pop out for you? If that's the case, try to twist it back and forth a bit and wiggle it to get it to work itself loose. Sometimes they sort of "POP" out.

remove the bolt and lift and twist... Just lift hard

Spray the bottom with carb cleaner to loosen teh hardened oil.

Re: 66 tbird

Sometimes they are pretty friggin' hard to get out. I bought a junked 460 block, and the aluminum shaft of the distributor broke in the block, so just the collar stuck out. I actually had to grind away at the thing to get it thin enough to fold in a little when I hammered on a punch on the collar. Once it moved, I had to use a crowbar to finally get it out. That was just the collar, mind you.

No one believed me that the dang thing wouldn't just "come out" when I pulled on it.

So, if everything is loose, you may have to hammer on it to get it loose (assuming that you are buying a new distributor, though). Or, pry in it carefully with a pry bar. But I agree with FE (as usual), spray some carb cleaner, or even liquid wrench, and keep at it.
