How does the car accelerate? Even pull or does it reach an rpm and then seem as though it comes alive, and also what rpm do you reach when under brake lock and full throttle? Is this a new combination for the car?

Re: my 66 428 will not burn tires

I know I am asking questions and not answering your's, but I am just trying to get a better handle on the problem. I assume you are sure the cam is in straight up and not off? What carb and distributor are you running? I asked about the rpm wondering about the converter, but if the set up is not new then you did not have this problem before. I had a car that would not spin the tires at all, but upon accerleration it would come alive about 2800 rpm (problem was wrong converter).

Re: my 66 428 will not burn tires

Exactly same here, lazy 66 built 428 on my gal !

It accelerates ok from 30 mhp to 70 mph,

0-60mph very slowly , max rpm ca 2500-2800 rpm,
when secondary vacuum venruris open , sboooooooo sound and nothin happends.

At normal traffic, typical zero to 40 mph, goes easy, rpm 0-1600 rpm.

Very drivable, but no way burn rubber.

I have both 600 cfm and 750 cfm edelbrocks, both works same way, perhaps with 600 cfm little better, pertronix inside, 3.00 rear end.
COnverter installed in states, late 80`S early 90`s

Does torq converter really steal power so much, that car lost it`s power ?

From where to find correct one..
66/67 428, flexpalte and starter are 66/67 models..
Trans.. no idea.. middle case.. perhaps orginal..
Really odd Trans identification place
PCE AU = column shift 390 -4V
1 = Detail change
engine displacement= 097 WTF !!!!!!!! So small engine !!! LOL
date code = 131 what ever that means !

Re: my 66 428 will not burn tires

A converter is a torque multiplier and will let the car get to the rpm level that is in the torque curve to provide greater launches. Picking a converter should be left to a converter shop and they will need lots of information to better pick a stall speed that suits your situation such as rear end gear, weight of vehicle, motor horsepower and torque, and size of tires. As I posted earlier I have been through this before and if the wrong converter is in place it seems as though the car has no power off the line and has to fight, so to speak, until it gains enough rpms. I have purchased from West Coast Converters and have been pleased wi the service and product. wcc@westcoastconverter.com
