351c 2v headers and AOD swap

First of all, I am new to this forum and have a '73 Montego 351c 2v/FMX 4-door. I have a few questions that somebody may be able to answer.

Has anyone ever put headers on a 72/73 Torino/Montego with a 2v engine and a fmx trans.? All I can find are the ones that fit a C4 trans. Has anyone ever ran into this before. Any tips, part numbers, suggestions?

Has anyone swapped an AOD into a 351c equipped Montego or Torino? I am building my engine now and am building it to be a mild street motor. I am bumping the compression to 9.5:1, a mild cam, among other things. I was wanting to get info on this swap, so I could maybe start gathering parts now. I already have a 4R70W wide ratio planetary set. I would like to know what parts I need to get.

What year trans. is the best to get?
What driveshaft should I use?
What crossmember should I get?

I have built a EFI setup that ran great before the oil pump locked up due to a piece of valve stem seal getting past the screen. I am using a '93 Grand Marquis throttle body that already has an AOD throttle cable hole in the arm, so hooking that up should be a cinch.

I plan on breaking my engine in with the manifolds and swapping to headers later. Sorry for such a long post, but I figure someone on this forum will know something.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance, Chris.

351c 2v headers and AOD swap

I can help on some of the questions.

Look for headers designed to fit C-6 equipped cars. Generally, if they fit around a C-6 they will fit around the somewhat smaller FMX. I haven't looked up the part numbers but Hooker still offers 351C-2V headers for the 72-76 Torino Chassis.

I can't really advise you on the tranny upgrades but I suggest you post or do some searches on the Ford Tranny Forum:

Also my 73 Gran Torino Wagon has an AOD. It was already installed when I bought it last April on Ebay.

351c 2v headers and AOD swap

While not a Torino owner I did have a 351C-2V (with 4 bbl carb) 72' Mustang that I swapped a built AOD into. I originally had an FMX so the headers were for that trans, when I went to the AOD I had to cut off one small ear off of the bellhousing, it didn't serve any purpose that I could see except get in the way of my header!

I had to flip the shifter linkage and I used a Lokar cable from the trans to the Holley 750dp.

Funny, on the box the carb came in it said "NOT FOR USE WITH AOD TRANS". pffft!! I made it work no prob!

351c 2v headers and AOD swap

Uh, I'm not so sure about the Hooker 351C 2V headers. I had a set of those in a Torino 25 years ago, but I thought that they had since been dropped from their current line-up. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

If they're NOT available, call Stan @ FPA. He makes a killer set of headers... excellent workmanship...they fit... period! And Stan is a straight-up guy. He'll tell you what will/won't work, and he'll let you know ahead of time if there are any issues to be aware of and how to overcome them. He worked with me on my 351W/C6 header combo and I could NOT be happier! FPA lists specific 351C headers for this chassis in 2V and 4V configuration. No tranny or ground clearance issues, either! Give him a call....
