Well, in hind sight...you CAN do anything you want, it just takes time, some skill, and effort.
People told me time and time again I could not make my '84 F150 into a hardtop convertable, but I had all the hard work done in under 3 months.
As far as the Elite to '72 Torino, it could be done...one of the other things I would do if that was the case, would be also the conversion of the rear bumper over to the 1972-1973 rear bumper to clean the back of the car up.
As far as matching the fenders to the doors, flip it around, section the rear of the elite fenders into 1972 Torino fenders.
The front frame would require rework, and while not the simplest thing to do...I have a pair of complete front frame assemblies for a '72, along side the frame assembly off my last 1976 Elite project.
My last elite I had, I had grafted the center section off a 1972 sport hood, and cleaned the front end up some with a 1974 xr7 cougar bumper.
Just depends on how much work you are willing to do.

One of these days, Eliteman, I'm going to try something as radical as one of your projects. I think that there are enough '72s around that it would be easier to fix up a rough one than to graft the front clip on the Elite, but maybe not. You obviously speak from experience.

I have daydreamed about turning a formal roof (or even a 4-door) '72 into a convertible. I guess your truck indicates that it is not impossible.

Tim-
I actually years back had one of my Elite part cars, and I was sectioing it for panels for my last Elite project that was a driver and not my carb fire car. We sectioned that car up, I stripped the roof off, and I sware that Elite was an awsome looking car with the roof removed. I have pictures, but I need to dig them up and scan them in some day.
My only concerns over chopping a Torino into a convertable would be the rigidity issues...I mean, while these cars have a frame that could stand about anything short of a nuclear blast, any time the top gets removed off a car, stuff still needs to be braced.
My truck was an exercise in insanity. In hindsite, i was stupid not to put atleast a 6 point cage but I drove it like that for 5 years.
It sucked when it rained, but was fun, if nothing else from people being shocked to see that thing, with no roof.
