Re: 400m into 68 torino

A cut and paste from a post I wrote in http://www.torinocobra.com/forum/vie...?t=483&start=0 ================================================== == http://www.broncotech.com/cgi-bin/ul...?ubb=forum;f=5 http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=54 You may have already found the above forums on the 351M/400, they are excellent sources of info; Also get an opinion from Tim Meyers at http://www.tmeyerinc.com/400Ford.htm , he plenty of support/parts and information for the 400. I have a 400 in my 76 Gran Torino, it was a bit weak until it was rebuilt with a mild cam, flat top pistons etc. Dynoed at 355 HP and 449ft-lb. Mine is an excellent motor for daily driving, but can’t breath in the higher rpm, basically the hp flats lines from 4000 rpm to 5000 rpm, but it does really pull strong right from the idle. If you are doing any work on it, its definitely worth going with quench heads, I stayed with the original heads, and with 9.7:1 compression, I have to run with 94 Octane. ================================================== == Reliability of the 400 is a matter of option, it’s an excellent motor for the right application. It all depends on what you want to do. Most people have a strong option usually based on their experiences, ether they love the motor or they love to bash it. I can’t comment on what motor is better for what purpose, or on what budget, I am about as non-technical as you get, all my knowledge has come from reading forums. I know for my Torino the 400 has been an great motor for daily driving, well behaved and reliable, tons of low end torque for burnouts etc – but mine is defiantly not a motor that likes to rev. which I assume is due to the choice cam and using stock heads. In my humble option, unless you will be happy for quite awhile with the 400, I would wait until you can go for the 460, projects always cost more than you budget. There are plenty of articles on the web to read, here are a few more. No idea if they are accurate or not. More info: Rumors and Myths on the 351M/400 http://www.projectbronco.com/Technic...the_rumors.htm http://www.projectbronco.com/History..._ford_351m.htm http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/i...00_Engine.html Yet more info: http://home.earthlink.net/~bubbaf250/index.html

Re: 400m into 68 torino

It doesn't fit very well, I can tell you from experience. My dad tried this on what is now my '69 Torino, and we were sawing corners off the exhaust manifolds, cutting the studs to the minimum, etc. We also had trouble with the oil pan clearing the sway bar, and some other issues. Good luck finding any headers, you would need to custom fab them.

The FE engines that came in these cars were also a pretty tight fit (that's what my car has), but there are solutions for the headers and the sway bar doesn't need to be relocated.

I would go with one of the common options, 302, 351W, or FE. The 351W is probably the best performer for the money.

No need to get personal bud- I was just stating my opinion and I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way. No need to tell me to read about Ford engines- I've done plenty of that already. Obviously Ford never intended for it to be a performance engine and the aftermarket doesn't look at it that way either because they are lacking basic performance items like headers for cars in which it came factory installed, much less for a car made before the engine was ever produced. I'm not sure what point you're trying to prove, but trying to convince anyone that it's a good idea to put a 400 into a 68 Torino sounds a bit rediculous- even more so if you're on a tight budget like this guy seems to be. First you talk about the great factory heads (which they are not) and then you talk about aftermarket Cleveland heads, but that doesn't apply at all to what this guy looking to do. Read what Wookie1 wrote- he's had first hand experience with this swap and he recommends the staying with the Windsor.

Here's the bottom line:
swap a 400 into 68 Torino (or any car really)= bad idea, especially on a budget
hop-up a 400 already in a 78 Bronco = not a bad idea if you're on a budget
