400m into 68 torino

I currently have a nonstock 351 windsor with a fmx.in a 68 fairlane that is doa. Does anyone have thoughts on swapping the 400m.into it. I have one avalible for free. read that it can be built to make lots of tourque .Motor mounts?seem to be a stumbling block. Ive heard mention that 400 used the same as 351 windsor but I dont beleive it. I do know 289 302 351W and C used the same design motor mount to the block. and that the 351M and400M used the same as 429 and 460.?? and I think I can take a bellhousing from 351m or 400 fmx. Ive seen a guy put a 400 and c6 into a 68 cougar but did not know what mount he used

If you have to build the engines I would just stick with the windsor..If you can use the 400 as is it might be worth it.

I say go with the 400 its different and also it uses 429/460 mounts and bellhousing pattern should be AOK going that way

400s have weak lower ends. I have replaced more cranks in 351/400ms then all others combined. If your are going through that trouble get the 460. I believe there is more high performance equipment for the 351.

i dont proclaim to be a master of cars but i have been around fords my whole life and i have really not known 400 351m to be weak in the lower end unless your pushing a stock motor past 5000k all the time or dont know how to do a build up just my opinion

Redo the 351W but stroke it to the max. It fits, parts are available and cheaper, lighter.

351m-400 mounts are different than the 460 mounts. Personally I would stick to the 351w.

Take the free 400 and sell or trade it so you can fix the 351W or buy another. The 400 wasn't used until like '72, so you'd be on your own with basic things like mounts and headers.

You are probably right, but I don't think the 400 was used in the Torino until '72 when they went to the new full frame body. Either way, a 400 is pretty worthless as a performance engine IMO. It may be OK in a 70's pickup with a few bolt-ons, but probably not worth the hassle and money to swap it into something in which it wasn't even a factory option.
