bumpers

I have been wondering what to do about my bumpers untill i can afford nice ones...

the back one is covered with surface rust. front not as bad.
i'm tempted to clean em up and prime and paint them?

anyone done this? its just a temporary thing, they are in really decent shape core wise.

this is before i tore into the car

body color?
grey hmmmmm

Re: bumpers

i had a similar problem. i ground down the rust and painted it silver. paint won't stick to chrome. i've read where people have sandblasted the chrome them painted them. chrome is hard as hell. i figure it would take a pretty hard abrasive to profile it. good luck. let us know if you have sucess.

Re: bumpers

I had the same problem ($$) with a '63 Comet I restored. I sandblasted, primed, and painted them body color. The car is long gone, but 3 or 4 years after the fact, the paint still looked good.

Re: bumpers

Find a chemical dipper, that does sheetmetal-a local place around here does bumpers pretty cheap, thinking $30-$50-ish for a pair.
Then just get some half decent paint, or hell even POR15 as a basecoat then top coat it with color of your choice.
Was thinking the same for my Torino, but I may still rechrome.

Re: bumpers

that looks like my rear bumper, haha. I just cleaned it, and sparyed it in the bad areas, leaving all the chrome I could. I had to basically do all of the face, and just a few spots on top with that chrome spray paint. Looks better than it being all rusty, but does not look like chrome. It is for sure a quick fix while I wait for money to get a new one. I used some steel wool to blend the paint into the real chrome. its a 15 footer for sure.

Hay dude. That crome paint is a disapointment all right. Its a pitty it dosent come out like the lid.Try Brasso it will get rid of most of the surface rust and put a protective coating on the rest.It sure brings out the shine on crome and you can even use it on your paint. The more elbow grease you use the better it comes up.The deep pitted rust you cant do much with but you might be surprised at what it comes out like.Ihope this helps. Spacey.
