351C doesn't run

I was hopin anyone would know why my 351C won't run. I recently rebuilt the heads and put a fresh intake and carb on the motor. I was trying to save some money by not doin the whole thing. (I dont know where they came from, but I found pieces of broken up metal in the heads after pulling the valve covers off before re-doing the top end) The car ran well for a couple of months, except for an oil leak that I fixed. All of the sudden, the car wouldn't run. I replaced the gas line finding that the old one was clogged and the coil and got it to run in idle, but it just pops and spits when given throttle. there are no crossed wires. please help!

if you had no fuel filter in the line then trash probly got in the carb and is clogging the jets or needle rods. buy a rebuild kit and take it apart. if its your first carb i would pay someone or pay close attention to the instructions

its a brand new carb and had a fresh fuel filter all the time. someone told me today it could be electrical. im thinking the voltage regulator because the car used to blow oil everywhere before I touched it.

Re: 351C doesn't run

you think its the regulator because it blows oil everywhere? that makes no sense. But what it sounds like is that the distributor is off, if you took it out it could be 180 degrees off or it could be off a tooth or so which would cause it to run poorly. With that said you dont have to take the dizzy off to get the manifold off so in that sense it might not be the problem.

Re: 351C doesn't run

no...... the car originally ran ok and blew oil at that. so i decided to rebuild the top end of the motor just to fix the leak (blown head gasket). it ran great for a while, but then just started to run poorly and eventually quit. I recently got it to run by putting a new coil and distributor. I am wondering if any other electrical device was soaked by oil and screwed up. The car runs in idle just fine but it pops and spits when revved.

Did you remove the distributor at all during the rebuild of the top end? Sounds like it could be a timing problem.

Or check to see if your cam has gone flat.

Re: 351C doesn't run

yes i did, but how can i make sure that it is in perfectly.

-I also would like to know if the oil pressure reading of usually around 5psi is normal for that motor when warm b/c my other cars are always around 40psi

Re: 351C doesn't run

wait wait wait wait wait....

you said you found chunks of metal under the valve covers before you pulled the heads.. but you left the rest of the engine alone you did not rebuild it at all or disassemble and inspect for wear before running the engine again I just want to make sure I am right on this..

then once you put the heads and such back on the car and got it going it ran fine for a few months correct? now is not running so fine?

what size carb do you have on there? now what kind of distributor are you running?do you have points if so when was the last time they were replaced?

Re: 351C doesn't run

yes, i did find metal chunks that looked like circular rings of some sort, but dissmissed them b/c the motor didn't make any unusual noises (call me stupid but I didn't have the time or money then to do a total rebuild)

it did run fine 4 a few months and now it is not.

i have a holley 750, am running a stock replacement distributor with new points

Re: 351C doesn't run

Those metal chunks that looked like cirrcular rings werel ikely pieces of broken hardened stem seals...

The popping sounds like a poor point gap...
