Re: cyclone/torino console

The only difference is in the console trim plate that goes on top. The 4 speed plates have a kind of square box protruding downward while the automatic plate has no flange to speak of. The console itself is the same in every other way.

Re: cyclone/torino console

Believe it or not, they are different bodies from 68,69 to 70,71.
If you look at the back of the base, the 70 model added an ash tray and moved the light.
The outside dimensions are the same and will fit either body style.
If you are going for correct no, but if you just want a console go for it.

Re: cyclone/torino console

I was always told that the rear " ash receptacle" was an option. If it was not standard equipment, that might explain the difference. I can say that I removed a console with an ashtray from a Ranchero many years ago. The car was punched hard in the front and was (at that time ) considered totalled. I always thought it funny that the console had a rear ashtray where no one could reach it in a Ranchero.

Re: cyclone/torino console

There are several other small differences that most people would not notice unless you saw two together.

- There were two different designs of the molded piece that surrounds the ashtray at the front. In one design this is stapled to the console, and other just sets in there. The stapled vesion was phased out, as I think they area started to lift after a while because it was too thin. I have one 68 console that is one way, and another 68 console that is the other.

- There are several different compartment cover designs as well. Some designs use a physical latch, which others do not. The latch appears to have been phased in during the 70's. The cover has a catch for the latch which is mounted tp the body of the console.

- This is not so much a "design" difference, but something to look for. At the factory, while installing the console, it appears as though the consoles were trimmed for clearance on the sides depending on if the car had manual trans, console shift or column shift. A majority of all consoles have cutouts on them right where the shifter humps is. Some of the cuts are clean, some of them are quite crude. I have a column shift console that has had no trimming.

- The air divertor in front of the console is different from A/C cars to non A/C cars too. This is not a console difference, but I thought I would point it out.

Re: cyclone/torino console

thanks for the help. someone cut up my 4 spd console to krap to put in a aftermarket hurst shifter which i dont even think is for a 69 cyclone.the shifter smashes your knuckles into the dash when you shift up.anyway trying to find a replacement console and the price i see them going on ebay is insane so i want to make sure i buy the right one if i find it.they even cut up the transmision tunnel and tunnel cover.guess the proper shifter was not a resonable option for the last owner.
