Question Fuel tank to cell swap

I have a 1970 Torino with the wonderful California fuel tank that leaks fumes and wanted to replace it. I can't see spending the $400 for a replacement tank when a fuel cell will cost less or at least the same and would be much safer if a rearender happened. Has anyone done this that came out well for street use and not just drag racing? And what would need to be done to change to a loop system instead of the coal can setup? Thanks for any help
