460 into 1968 Tornio Questions.

Ok. What type of motor mounts are needed? I see the crites stuff and have heard good things. Anything OEM type (wrecking yard) will work?

I know I will need better springs and brakes (already going to get the Chockostang 11" brakes and BB Springs) and a better Radiator. The transmission is still kinda up in the air. I score an AOD for $50 needing a rebuild, but that means I will have to add another $500 to the build for the Lentech conversion plate. C6 are good, not sure about the new autos that are electronically controlled. It will be a street car with some strip time. Pretty mild and tame motor.

So I know I will need
Different Mounts
Different Radiator (No problem there)
Transmission decision C6/AOD/Whatever that electronic one is called.
9" Rear (got an 8" now. )
Bigger fuel line and sender (crites?)
Anything else, besides the usual stuff? (headers, brackets etc).

How does the Shelby drop work out with the 460 in these cars?
Thanks!!!

Re: 460 into 1968 Tornio Questions.

Im preparing for the same build for my 69. Probably another 3 year project. Im working from the rear up. I plan on a 512 TFR headss and street friendly 10:1 comp.

You pretty much mentioned everything you will need. as far as motor mounts go I've heard 70 torino 429 mounts will bolt right into the 68/69's. Crites is the only place that I've seen for headers, you will need those or get custom ones made ($$$$$). The stock c4/c6 trans crossmember will work for the 460 unless you with an AOD, I beleive the stock one will work but you might have to move it back one hole or so.

Im having my 9" built up now, ordereing mosier 31 splines this weekend, after the rear end is in with new larger driveshaft, I'll put in big block front springs, larger brakes, and run new fuel lines with an electric pump. My 460 is already back from the machine shop, so i'll be ordering the rotating assembly soon.

You might want to consider making sub frame connectors to stiffen her up. I would also get larger sway bars (add one to the rear), and beefen up the shock towers, either with extra welds or supports to handle the new weight of the beast. They tend to sag anyway. I found a shock tower brace on ebay the other day for a 68/69, looked pretty good.

Our suspension is virtually identical to the stangs so the shelby mod works, however, I considered it but with an additional 2" drop on the front, It would put too much angle on the ball joint.

Good luck, show pics!

Re: 460 into 1968 Tornio Questions.

Ave Fellow DFWer! I'm out in Rowlett. (Near Garland/Mesquite) What cars did that strut tower brace fit ? I want to get one. I will be putting in the subframe connectors when I do the 9". I tore apart the 460 this weekend and I found this
Block: D9TE
Heads: D3VE
Rod Caps: C9AE (I know C9 for sure)
Rods: D6VE ( thought it should have been D6TE since it was a truck motor)

Anyhow, I found out that the motor was rebuilt before. It was bored .040 over. It ate some rings on this rebuild (I got it off craigslist for $200, carb to pan) but the bores still look good. The mis matched rods and rod caps have me a little concered, but nothing new rods can't fix. The crank has been turned .010 on the rods, not sure about the mains as it is stillin the block until tonight, but it will need to get turned again, as the bearings looked like copper bracelets. Valves look new.

I am still not sure about the transmission. I have an AOD needing rebuilding, but $500 for the plate to mount it is a little steep. I have the original C4... I can get a C6 or a new fangled OD electronically controlled. I will wait on that until it is time to order the parts. I figure with the D3VE heads, I will get a gasket match port job and the removal of the exhaust hump and some "flat top" pistons and be ok. I am looking at the hyperteuctic (sp?).

Re: 460 into 1968 Tornio Questions.

I dont see the brace for sale, but this is the ended item on ebay. eBay Motors: Fairlane Torino 66 67 68 69 Shock tower brace kit FORD (item 140231010430 end time May-11-08 21:13:25 PDT)

I know where Rowlett is, I have a co-worker that lives there. Im out there every once in a while. Post some pics of the car, we'd all love to see it. I dont know if you have an engine builder but Kim Barr, builds race engines and is really good from what I hear, hes out your way. Hes a bit pricey but you should get what you pay for.

My 460 is a d3v3 block, C9 rods, and some other wierd ods and ends, Its been .030 over already and one cylinder is sleeved, other than that shes good to go.

Re: 460 into 1968 Tornio Questions.

Hi there
I have a 69 with a 460, i brought the car with the engine already fitted so can't really help with engine mounts, although Crites do their own.I have just fitted a set of their headers and are a nice piece of kit, although they did hang down very low (the 2 front pipes both sides run under the cross member) but crites do state they are designed to be used with their mounts, and they state also that the ribs on top of a c6 need grinding off for clearance when using their mounts,(my c6 still has the ribs with plenty of clearance). I ended up moddifying the headers very easily as all 8 pipes have a vertical section in them that i cut a section out off and welded them back up (the pipes are all seperate with a slip on collector), I did the front pipes on the car to get as close to the crossmember as possible and then bolted these to a spare head and then done the rears to fit the fronts. My car is running power steering also, i have now wrapped the steering pipes with some heat sheilding as they are close to the headers now.
hope this is of some help Mick

Re: 460 into 1968 Tornio Questions.

for some reason and I tempted to go the 351W route now... punched and stroked... argh decisions decision... I am now thinking 351W for these reasons...
Already have a 302, pretty much bolt in swap....
Exhaust will already be set up...
One clutch linkage to worry about
can get them cheap...
roller cams...
some performance parts I have will bolt on...(headers, GT40 heads...)
transmission wont be an issue...
8" rear might hold up

reasons why I want the 460
540+ cubic inches
I have a torn down block, D3VE and DOVE heads
I have the football rods
will only need cam, intake, headers and rockers for performance upgrade.
cubic inches will do the talking
new clutch linkage
new bellhousing
new clutch
smaller front sway bar
will need 9" rear

argh the decisions.... car will have a cage... I do need shoulder straps on the seat belts...(plus subframe connectors..)

Re: 460 into 1968 Tornio Questions.

The 460's nice, brought my car off ebay with the engine fitted, has an 850dp holley on an old port o sonic inlet, stock dove c head's,has a cam of unkown spec but i don't think it's a big cam as all the valve gear's stock.fitted the headers due to original's rotted away, fitted an old pair of slick's and the car ran 12.8's at 111mph with stock suspension and 3.25 gears.I was well impressed.
