Hard to start when engine hot, Help!

Just recently join the forum. I have a 1971 Torino GT Convertible, 302, automatic. Had it recently and loving it! Currently has 67,506 original miles on it. Got it from a gentleman from Vermont who restored it. I am the third owner.

Recently, I have been experiencing some problem in starting it after I drove it around in hot weather. I was told by a Ford mechanic here in Charlotte, NC that the probable cause is vapor lock. Does anyone encountered similar problem? Is it vapor lock or somethingelse? what cause this problem (if it is vapor lock)? what type of solution would anyone suggest? Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

Re: Hard to start when engine hot, Help!

If turns slow it is not vapor lock. Turning slow is caused by too much compression, too much timing or weak starter or battery. Do you have headers? Too much heat from heaters will give you problems. May need to install shield. Start with checking timing. Vapor lock is when engine is too hot and it cant get in carb and boils out of float bowl. My ole 390 Camper special did it and I wrapped fuel lines with foil and put heat shield under carb and no more problems.

Re: Hard to start when engine hot, Help!

Thank you for your response. The Torino has no headers. I changed the battery 6 months ago. Installed an insulation jacket around the starter and solenoid. Just recently tuned up and timing adjusted. It turns but would not start after driving it around for a while. It only does this during hot weather (summer). I have to pop up the hood to let the engine cool down for a couple of minutes and then it starts. Sometimes I remove the air filter cover and then in a few minutes the car starts with no problem. The car does not stall when I am driving it. Still don't know the real cause. Any other suggestions?
Thanks.

That could be vapor lock. They make a shield to go under carb to keep heat away from the float bowls. Could also be blown power valve flooding the engine. What carb are you using? and thanks.

The carb is Autolite (2100) D1AF DA with a 1.08 venturi - marked on the side of the carb in a circle. What can cause a blown power valve? where can I get the shield? Thank you much for your assistance!

Re: Hard to start when engine hot, Help!

Back fires will blow power valves. Some times they die of old age. Easy to change. Power valve is on the bottom of carb under a cover held on by four screws and not the accel pump. Pull cover and unscrew.

Thank you much for your assistance. Hopefully replacing it will solve this problem.

Again, thank you for your help. I told my brother-in-law about your 64 Galaxie! Do you have additional pictures of the car? If you can, will you send me some photos. My e-mail address is rbdones@yahoo.com. By the way, I am interested in restoring a 66 or 67 Galaxie. What is your take on the 66 and 67 Galaxie? Nothing like your 64 Galaxie!

Thanks.
