Engine Temp

I have a weinland stealth intake and I think my temp gauge is giving me an improper reading. So, I got a 2nd temp gauge and was going to hook it up to see if it gave me the same reading. I found 2 different spots to put the temp gauge sending unit. 1. Behind the distributor, hard to get to. 2. On top of the water spicket. I'm wondering if engine temp is just water coolant temperature? Also, there is a possible third spot. On one of the runners but I think this may be for air fuel temp.

Engine Temp IS water coolant temp. That is at the top of the engine when it goes back in the radiator (water flows through the bottow side of the pump, and out the top of the manifold and back into the radiator).

Anywhere on the manifold, going through a water jacket should read the same.
