Cool Safest One Rust Remover Test

Here, I am finally going to post something that could pass as usable information for someone reading it. I ordered a gallon of Safest Rust Remover that my friend in Wisconsin suggested. I took one on my hood hinges, that was badly surface rusted and seized up. I let it soak in the solution overnight and check out the results! With a little WD-40 at the pivot points, the hinge now moves as freely as a new one. Check it out......$25 for 1 gallon. The stuff is completely re-usable, just strain out the debri. Over time the solution weakens but you are supposed to get a lot of use out of it, if you keep it clean.

Question Re: Newbie here with a 68' GT

I thought I would post up some pics of the other hood hinge I got cleaned up, along with the springs. They were in better shape, because I found them in the trunk, when cleaning it out this weekend! Now that they are de-rusted, I think I might hit it with a wire wheel in some spots and prime it up. Any particular primer you guys recommend???

Also, does anyone have any tips on how to re-attach the spring on this one hood hinge? Not exactly easy to pull the spring and clip back on. Was wondering what the trick to it was. The other hinge still has it's spring on.

Re: Newbie here with a 68' GT

I used a bench mounted vise and my biggest Channel Locks. Clamped one end of the spring into the vise and then put the hinge in place. Grabbed the other end of the spring with the pliers and pulled while moving the hinge onto the spring.

That’s the safest way I could figure out how to do it. I might just be able to post a picture this evening.

If you get the technique down you can paint it more thoroughly without the spring and also grease it up.

BTW, I've had good results on rust converting primers(not rust encapsulators). They work best on the cleaned up light rust.

Thats a good idea on how to get the spring on. I will try that, thanks for the tip. Thats just the info I was looking for. So yeah I guess what little bit has re-surface rusted, I could knock out with a rust converting primer. Like this?

You are right, I should def. take the springs off before paint.

Oh yeah as far as the grease goes....Is white lithium grease the best stuff to use?

Dang it, one last question.....were these hinges painted semi-gloss black from the factory? Thanks again...

Yes, thats the stuff. A few companies make it. Rustoleum and Dupli-Color, too. Dupli-Color is available at O'reily(PN: RF129). I've tried 3 different brands and they all act a little different from each other. They don't make the first one I tried. The Rustoleum turns black no matter what. The Duplicolor only turns black on the rusty areas and stays clear on surounding and non-rusty areas. Make sure you have time to let it dry because it is not a quick drying primer.

I don't know if its the best but it is what I use. I have used spay lithium on my hood and door hinges for years. I reapply it every couple of years.

I don't know what (or if) they were painted from the factory. I'll check my Torino Restoraton book. I've always liked mine black. I use the Underhood Black spray from Eastwood now. It's a semigloss and not a Ford finish but it looks good.
