Re: Newbie here with a 68' GT

No, I am totally serious - fastbacks are way better!!!!

Actually, I am just happy to see the '68-'69s getting more attention lately. Prior to this it was all '70+ ones.

Re: Newbie here with a 68' GT

Redman71,
dug out the receipt last night, fronts are 17x8 with 4.75" bs p235/45/r17 on back 17x 9.5 with 5.0" bs p285/40/r17. had to roll the lip a little. I would bet a 5.5bs would work no mods. my advice is to measure, go to sleep wake up measure again, goto work measure again. keep measuring until your confident if you drop $2K on wheels and tires they'll fit.

i hope someone can reccomend a blaster with a good reputation. i find that i have high expectations of local shops. usually end up undoing what they do and redoing it myself. just me.

My rear wheels are 17x9.5's with 5.5" backspacing with 285 40's and they fit perfectly. Pretty much centered in the wheel wells.

Thanks cornhauler, torino420, for all the backspacing info. That will come in very handy. Yeah i hope someone can reccomend a blaster with a good reputation too. I would feel a lot better going in. I found quite a few here in the Dallas area, just not sure which one's the best of the bunch.

The entire car.......I found a place called North Texas Soda Blasting that charges $600 flat rate, plus $150 per hour for extra time. I'm guessing that will be around what most will charge. Im just trying to find one that wont screw you, and does good work!

Re: Newbie here with a 68' GT

A guy from North Texas Mobile Soda Blasting gave me a rough figure. Here is what he said....
"Ballpark figure would be from $800 to $1000, for the complete outside. Depending on if how many times it has been painted will determine how fast that it comes off. If you want the complete car inside and out i would ballpark around $1200-$1500. This covers every square inch of paint"

Found another much more reasonable sounding place. Plus I read where soda blasting can cause paint issues down the road.

North Texas Customs....
"North Texas Customs has a streamlined media blasting process that makes stripping your car affordable. We’ve seen customers being quoted up to $1400 for blasting alone! Let’s be honest, it doesn’t take that much time and materials to do. As a complete resto/rod shop, we know how to treat your metal. Competitive labor rate of $100/hr for blasting, with most unibody cars starting at 6-7 hours*. For full-framed cars, add 1-2 additional hours depending on frame complexity and wheel base. 13% material fee added to total."

Re: Newbie here with a 68' GT

I looked at that place when I first got my Torino. i decided to go simpler. I pulled both front fenders and took them to Custom Blasting here in Sherman. it was $150.00 to sandblast both fenders. once I had them back home and primed them they looked like NOS. for the body shell we used JASCO brand paint stripper from lowes. It comes in a gold and blue can. just spray it on a small section at a time and wait bout 5 minuets, then scrape it and all the paint off with a razor scraper. my car only had the original coat of paint on it and this stuff peeled it right down to shiney bare metal in no time.

Very good to know ddkbeam. Thanks for the tips and info. My car only has the original paint on it too, but a lot of surface rust! I hope to start deconstruction on the car this weekend.
