Cool Newbie here with a 68' GT

Hey guys-

I just picked up my first muscle car. I have been wanting a Torino GT for a long, long time. I went and bought a 1968 Ford Torino GT yesterday. $500 roller. Shes a bit rough, but fairly straight. Needs a lot of work, but a very solid Texas car.(built in Memphis, spent its life in North Texas) I plan to take my time and do it right. No rush here. Mostly surface rust you see. Only two small holes in the trunk, and one in the lower rear quarter panel. The floor pans, doors, frame and rockers are all solid and no holes. All the glass/trim is good, even has new rear glass. It still has the 9" rear, and front disc brakes. The interior is missing the console, and the panel covering the shifter hole though.
Cant wait to get it home and start cleaning it up.........All the bucket seats, emblems and trim are there for the most part. Originally it had a 302 automatic. I am thinking a 4 speed 390 may be in order......much to do before even thinking about motors.......

nice find. take your time, take as many pics as you possibly can when you pull it apart, bag and label everything. decide where you want to go (resto, restomod, protouring, street/strip, etc..) from the start. make a list, seek parts, hang out here, save money, spend money, have fun. have more fun. nice find!!

oh, and don't listen too much to the formal roof guys, they're just jealous.

Thanks a lot cornhauler for the nice words, and tips.....very nice car you have there yourself! Hey what size wheels are those on yours? Looks great. Thanks again.

Going to spend a lot of time now cleaning it out, and disassembling. Next saving up the cash to take it and get it media blasted, so I have nice clean metal to begin with.

Yeah I think in time, I can bring it back to life. I dont thing she is too far gone.

Weird.....I live in Frisco now, but grew up in Rowlett! Thanks I may indeed shoot you a PM at some point, like I said I am a newbie. I really appreciate the offer.
About 15 years ago when I was in highschool, all the dumb little mini-trucks were all the rage. I did body work and messed with suspensions at friends body shop. But I am a complete moron when it comes to doing serious work on engines! I really do hope to learn though. Everyone was a newbie at some point right? Just took me a little longer to get here.

Re: Newbie here with a 68' GT

see, those formal roof guys are already taken jabs, LOL!!

17" x 8" on front with 4.5" backspacing, I think, and 17" x 9.5" in back with 5" or 5.5" backspacing on rear. Vintage Wheel Works V45s. bought them from Newstalgia Wheel (goggle it) they had a package deal, tires mounted and balanced, FREE SHIPPING!! couldn't beat it anywhere.

funny story, i was at the local walmart early one sunday morning, making my rounds when over the intercom "..would the driver of a red chevrolet pcikup please come to the service desk." this lady had ran in to the back of my daily driver, '05 silverado. i always park away from everybody, in the open parking lot, but somehow she rear ended my parked truck. anyway, to make a long story short, bought a salvage yard bumper for the truck and spent the rest on the wheels and tires for the torino.

Talking Re: Newbie here with a 68' GT

Whoo hoo another N. Texas guy! Yeah I saw this car on craigslist I think, I wanted the bucket seats. Welcome!

So there is 4 local torino guys right here...almost enough for a car club huh.

I dont mind helping another torino man either, my buddy and me did literally everthing but base and clear on my car. We spend hours and hours on it all the time. Lots of fun, if you need a hand lemme know I'd help too, we can have a strip down party, provided you bring the stripper
