Re: C4 to AOD

It seems it's a pain in the a** to set up the TV cable, so what about that kind of AOD without TV cable:

Quote:
Built for hi-performance Pro street vehicles, Street rods, and limited racing.
No TV cable or Governor is required.
No vacuum lines or kick-down components are required.
Full manual valve body - Forward Shift pattern only.
Complete unit comes with detailed installation and wiring instructions.
(When converting from any automatic transmission w/ computer control the computer from a stick-shift trans must be used)
FB Performance - PRO STREET/STRIP 4STB - W/EOD (SMALL BLOCK FORD)

Are they crap?

A full manual body still requires a TV cable?

Re: C4 to AOD

Great write up. I had problems with the Lokar bracket you used that mounts to the carb. I got too much flex with the bracket.
I used this bracket: Lokar: Billet Aluminum Throttle Cable Mounting Bracket for Edelbrock 4-Barrel Carburetors.

This bracket gave me much firmer shifts. No more flex from the smaller/thinner bracket.

Lokar is also making a nifty linkage for you column shifter guys.

Can you use these settings for a stock build transmission?

Smile Re: C4 to AOD

Muscleponey, I want to thank you for your articla - I'm just starting on a similar swap, 302/AOD into a 1963 Mercury Comet. You have saved me a LOT of hunting and asking questions!
RE: why doesn't TCI know what to do - why don't you send them YOUR article, maybe it will help them do better for other folks! ( I teach high school Markweting, and I'm 60 - I've learned to share for the common good...)
Thanks again!

Re: C4 to AOD

Thanks for the help guys! I had two issues... the governor was sticking and my detent cable was not set up properly.
Once I got it all working, I promptly burned up 4th gear and destroyed the OD drum. I learned the hard way that if you are making any substantial HP, never shift into 4th at wide open throttle! The OD just cant handle it even if it has the wider band.

Second time around, I had it rebuilt locally by Gene Hughes using a custom valve body and a high performance kit from Broader Performance. The custom valve body allows me to hold the 1-2 shift and the 2-3 shift; then it will shift to 4th only once I let off the gas which prevents it from ever going into OD at WOT. I can also use a regular 3-speed shifter with a 1-2-D-N-R-P pattern. I highly recommend the Broader Performance valve body and it costs only $200.00.
My AOD now works prefectly. It shifts like a C4 1st - 3rd and then has the overdrive for highway cruising.

Thanks again for the great article!

Re: C4 to AOD

Just for another option, for those reading this, I went with a 4R70W instead of an AOD - no TV cables to mess with!

Jay Broader built my tranny/converter. I had some programming issues initially, since it is computer controlled, but have all but fine-tuning now worked out.

Can we install a 4R70W on a vintage mustang?

Re: C4 to AOD

Sponge, if an AOD fits, I suspect the 4R70W would as well - they are related.

My question was bad. The 4R70W is computer controlled but a vintage motor isn't so my question is: compatible or not?

Baumann Electronic Controls Home Page

Baumann makes a stand-alone computer for these applications. You have to hook up a throttle position sensor, but that is simpler (to me) than properly setting up TV cables.

FYI, I am using my 4R70W in my '69 Falcon station wagon.
