Queenie's 55 Effie ... Diary of an F100 Project

I have all the shifter linkage parts in place ... "Z-bar" went in just fine ... the remainder of levers and rods are done to the best extent they can be for now, there will be some amount of "trial and error" to determine the exact angle and length (of how the parts come together and function) ... so small spot welds currently are in use until I can get to a "live" situation to verify that everything actually is working as it's intended.

Next stop will be the steering "U-Joint" connecting the end of the column to the rod off the steering gear box. I can buy parts to make this connection, but if I can scavange from the JunkYard and fabricate my way out of it ... I can easily save $100.00 and lose nothing in terms of quality or function.

It all boils down to what I can find on the scavanger hunt and my level of "Inginuity"

Queenie's 55 Effie ... Diary of an F100 Project

I never made it to the Junk Yard today but I did go to CarQuest and picked up a couple of things ... one of which was a guage set for Oil Pressure, Temperature and Battery.

I got the first two all hooked up and mounted the cluster under the "roof of the engine recess" on the firewall. I didn't want to start cutting holes in the firewall or floor for wiring (and such) quite yet ...this wll serve the purpose for now and is completely non intrusive to the project.

Still need the steering U-joint hook-up ... power steering pressure line and the exhaust system and finish off some engine wiring ... and I'll be able to try firing this big 460 up for the first time.

Queenie's 55 Effie ... Diary of an F100 Project

I picked up the P/S pressure hose today and got it installed on the Effie ...

I also made a temporary panel to mount the ignition switch (any maybe a few other things if needed)...

I'm not prepared to make desisions about cutting the dash and firewall yet, so I'll find ways to function without for now. Those decisions will be better left until my focus and attention are 100% on the interior.

I'll now be able to get the ignition switch wired up to the starter relay and the coil ... another step closer to firing the old girl up.

With the power steering now plumbed in ... all the systems are 100% intact and I can now load the fluids in the engine trans and radiator.

The basic "battery, alternator and charging" wiring harness is all in place, so I'm now down to just the steering "u-joint" and the exhaust system before I'm ready to fire things up and get the old girl moving on her own.

For anyone that hasn't seen the "Project Breakdown" ... I have included a link below ... if you want to check out what the project consists of and how I have put it together ... there are additional links on the page to some PICs as well.

Queenie's 55 Effie ... Diary of an F100 Project

I ordered my steering "U-Joint" today ... This is the one to connect the "Ididit" column to the rod off the steering grearbox. Since the power steering unit is already plumbed and ready to go, I should be all set to steer the old Effie from the driver seat by the first part of next week ... sure beats kicking the front tires one direction then the other

I also got the keys to the trailer today, so I can load the Effie up and haul it to the exhaust shop tomorrow (Saturday) ... that will seem like enourmous progress, because that and the steering hook-up are the final two "Big" issues to be resolved before I can fire up that 460.

I also cut the hole in the bed to access the fuel filler neck to the tank under the bed ... this hole will eventually have a nice "door" or "insert plug", once I get to the point of finishing off the bed ... for now, I just need to be able to get some gas in the tank

The Effie has an exhaust system now

It is seperate dual exhaust with 2.5" pipe from manifolds to the Factory Style mufflers ... then 2.25 tails exiting out the side in front of the rear wheels ... It may sound a bit small for some of you, but it's a very mild build on this 460, aimed completely at low end torque.

Chopo couldn't see a decent way to get it out the back, so it runs from the manifolds down and under the frame rails to the outside of the frame where there are two very large cavities for the big mufflers then the tails go straight back and bend outward (hidden behind the front of the rear fender) and dump down toward the street.

Unless you look inside the fender well you can't see any of the exhaust system.

This is some great progress.

I also picked up most of my "Fluids" today ... so I'll have those installed here shortly as well

Here is a link to the "Mobile under it's own power" work list ... any of you interested can see what I did ... I am just about there on this Phase of the project.
http://hometown.aol.com/queenies55f100/page2.html

Next phase will getting the old girl "Street Legal"

Queenie's 55 Effie ... Diary of an F100 Project

We got the BB 460 purring like a kitten tonight ...

Zero major problems or complications (one loose rocker), but that was corrected easily.

Oil pressure held steady at 50+ psi ... Temp never got over 190 during the entire 30 minute inital run-in.

As I said it's running as smooth as I could ever expect infact in order to hear the exhaust note you have to walk around to the side of the truck, because if you are in front the fan is louder than the exhaust rumble ... Chopo did a great job on the exhaust system.

Since every part of this project was put together and fabricated from scratch I do need to tighten a couple of transmission line fittings and one on the P/S ... Also noticed a couple of exhaust manifold bolts missing so I'll snag what I need of those and get that corrected.

Now I'll wait for the steering u-joint (should be here Monday or Tuesday) and I'll be able to fire this effie up and drive (not far though since it's not registed yet) ...

Next priority list will be all focused on "Street Legal."

This was one major hurdle to clear ...

Queenie's 55 Effie ... Diary of an F100 Project

Thanks Ross ...

A good thing for any of us "gear heads" to know ... "My427Stang" is quite possibly the best I have seen at any of this stuff.

Ross came to Vegas about a year and a half ago and has held my hand through several classic car restoration events.

Somehow Ross alway knows what to look for, how to troubleshoot and what to do, no matter what and all the while wasting zero time.

Ross is able to insure that I avoid problems before they have a chance to happen .. a truely amzing man to know.

Thanks again Ross ... FordMuscle can use your input, there are lots of great guys here now and one more is always welcome

BTW ... Ross has a 70 sportroof with a 427, four speed and I believe some 4.11:1 gears in back ...very cool pitch black Hot Rod. Here's a link
