Queenie's 55 Effie ... Diary of an F100 Project

Those brake lights now work too ...

Gotta-Love-It.

This is a huge step in the right direction.

One day this old girl will indeed be "Street Legal"

All the basic wiring for the Effie is now complete.

All exterior lights are wired.

The engine harness is 100% wired.

I want to install an electric choke on the Carb so that will be next on the agenda ...

Then I may put the old girl on the back burner while I knock out a couple of issues on Queenies 67 Camaro and catch up on a few Finances

Queenie's 55 Effie ... Diary of an F100 Project

OK ... I got the "Electric Choke" working correctly ... required some delicate fabrication using "Mis-Matched Parts" a welder, grinder and a hacksaw ... no small feat, but it works as intended and I did it for five bucks.

I think I'll get a factory style "Cold Air Intake/Air Cleaner" fixed up for the old girl before I pack her away to make time for the Camaro projects and the Mach1 Tach replacement.

THERE IS A STORY BEHIND THIS CHOKE ... HERE GOES ... COPY from "Garage" forum

This is mostly just another dumb story flowing from the fingers of Larry (that's me)

I got the wiring pretty well wrapped up on the Effie and wanted to get an electric choke on the Carb ...

The carb runs quite well not to mention it's been around a long time, helk it's almost a part of he family ... and right now I have no desire to spend more $$$ on another carb or any prefab choke set-up ...

So I resorted to my usual technique ... JUNKYARD scrounging.

Just so you know this carb is a Rochester QuadraJet (which is what I run on everything)

It came with one of those hot-air type chokes and I mangled that into a "manual pull" when I moved it from the Mach1 to the Camaro years ago.

For now the Carb is a "Dufer" on the 460 on the Effie Project.

I went to the salvage yard the day 545Mike was here and we found some basic componenets and came home.

The problem is ... in doing that you invariable end up with a "Mis-Match" of parts ...

Well after Ross and Mike helped me get the stuff mounted up ... I spent two days messing with things trying to figure how they should work ...

Then an epiphany hit me ... I finally quit thinking about "how the mechanism worked" and more about what the choke HAD to do.

It occurred to me:

It has to "Set the Choke" meaning "Close the Butterfly" up top and set the "Fast Idle."

It then had to allow the butterfly up top to open when it was ready to ... and do so independent of the fast Idle.

Then the fast idle "MUST" shut off once the throttle is punched.

AND ... this must all happen ... with no parts binding or ever interferring with other functions.

Once I got that understanding under my belt, I could look at my "Mis-Match" parts and figure out "what to do to them" to make all that happen.

Anyway, between the grinder the hacksaw and the welder ... I think I have now fabricated a functional electric choke, out of a pile of mis-match parts ...

And that is the end of my "DUMB STORY"

Moral to the story may be just as Ross told me a few days ago ... Sometimes one can end up with so much information you can't even think it through anymore ... It just becomes more and more confusing

When in Doubt ... SIMPLIFY

BTW ... Those are some damn tiny parts to be grinding and welding on.

NEXT PORTION ...

I got off work and decided to test out that newly fabricated choke ...

I had to do some bending on the rod between the choke lever and the butterfly to shorten it a tad (this was not allowing the Choke Lever and Hammer to fall far enough in the "off" position to un-lock the secondaries) ... I also had to grind down my Fast Idle pad on the mechanism I fabricated (I couldn't turn the fast idle down low enough with the adjuster screw)

Once I got those two things set up right ... all was well ... Choke sets and so does fast idle, the butterfly slowly opens to allow leaner mixture once the engine is running and beginning to warm up ... and the fast idle shuts off with a punch of the throttle ...

Gotta-Love-It ... It's so fuss free even Queenie will be able to deal with it

Queenie's 55 Effie ... Diary of an F100 Project

I finally got a "dip stick" in my rear sump pan ...

I don't know what one out of a catalog would cost or even where to find a factory one but I fabricated my own from a tube out of the JY (from a van with a small block rear sump motor) and a spare dipstick I had on hand and a fabricated anchor bracket I welded and grinded to secure the top of the tube.

I set it up to measure "Full" at six quarts of oil in the pan.

As my final act on the Effie before I stick it on the back burner ... This is also pretty much the last item of business in the engine compartment as well ...

I picked up a 70s era "D4" Air Cleaner assembly including the flex snorkel so I can run a "cold air intake" to the grill.

It's all set up in factory form with the holes I don't need welded in and bondoed up. It's painted and looking clean and good ... It has the factory vent to the valve cover to assist the PCV system.

As far as "Dressing Up" the engine compartment ... I haven't got into that ... It's all very clean and painted under there(black w/aluminium trim) ... but no Razzle Dazzle, Wah Zoo stuff going on at all ... just basic functional fashion.

But the beauty of it is ... everything works as it's suppose to

It's running great, very smooth and pretty quiet to.

Queenie's 55 Effie ... Diary of an F100 Project

As I keep trying to put the Old Effie on the "Back Burner" ... I keep realizing there is one or two more "Loose ends" to tie up before I can moth ball her.

It occurred to me I still have some bare metal pieces, so I need to get some good primer on those ... but then there is a little additional body work and sand blasting to do to the parts before I can prime them ...

It's like climbing a mountain ... you look up and see the horizon and climb there thinking it's the top ... and realize when you look up again there is still more mountain to climb

Anyway I got the old door hinges sand blasted and the body work to the P/S door done (it wasn't bad but bad enough that it needed doing before primer.)

Now I have three or four broken off bolts I have to get out of the doors before I can mount them back on the truck. They won't have latches or windows or anything but they will no longer be "Loose Pieces" and for me right now that alone is progress

Hopefully, before I go back top work later in the week I'll get things under control.

I think I did get the Tach issue on the Mach figured out and now I need to get on the Camaro issues ... if ever I get this Effie tied up and put away for a few weeks/months.

I managed to get the D/S door bolted to the cab today and continued on the P/S door "body work" ... I still need to weld in some factory holes where the mirror and door handles come though the skin, I can't finish it off til I get those slicked up ...
