I had a 94 F150 with the infamous 4.9. I put a K&N air filter on it, and a glasspack. (only mods). (to motor).
If I was pulling my trailer, with race car on board, it got around 11 mpg. If I was just driving the truck, it got around 15-17. (much better than my 97 with the 5.4 that I"m driving now).........

4.9's a great little motor. Lots of torque, and they hold together great. (with good /proper maintenence).

I never 'rodded' on the truck. It was my daily transportation, and it pulled my race car/trailer.
I do know that it'd smoke the tires from a standstill quite easily, tho. I never had any complaints about power, (except when towing, and trying to pass someone).
It handled like a race car, (had that one lowered too), plus all lightning suspension on it.
Go around corners like it was on rails. Tires were the limiting factor there.
But with the 4.9, it just needed more power for everyday use.
Miss that old truck. SAd thing is I get to see it every day. Our parts dork bought it..............

I like the 4.9 for a beater. Had a 76 F250 4x4 with 4.10s, big 4 speed and the 300. Got about 10 mpg city/road. I kinda figured it would do better (good engine, well tuned).

My old 79 with the 300 3.25 gears and SROD (3 speed overdrive) would get 15 around town and 21 on the road. Had a bit more power, but then again it weighed over 1000 pounds less... That was a cool little truck, too bad it got t-boned.

I don't think I'd have the big 6 in anything other then a shortbed 2x4 (same with a 302).
