IH 7.3 IDI vs Cummins 5.9: Which one to use?

I hope I don't tick anyone off with the fact that I would consider a Cummins for my F350. Here's the deal. I just bought a 93 F350 4x4 SRW w/460. The 460 runs fine so I am not in a big hurry to do anything but... I had planned that if the 460 ever needed rebuilding that I would just stick a 12 valve Cummins 5.9 in it. The reasons I wanted to use the Cummins are because 1) They are smaller and take up less room in the engine bay 2)Easier to route all the plumbing on 3)Since they are smaller access for maintenance is easier 4)They are beefier than the 7.3. 5)Good fuel mileage while still making decent power! The problem is I just picked up a wrecked 93 F250 with a 7.3 for a mere pittance. The guy had bought it from his employer with the intention of installing the motor in his personal truck. It had been sitting for 4 years when he decided he wanted to sell it. I brought it home and had it running in 2 hours. It runs great! I can even drive it around on the farm! The dilemma is should I just prepare the 7.3 for eventual transplant or sell it and keep an eye open for a good deal on a Cummins? I can get an adapter to hook the 5.9 up to the 460 ZF but using the 7.3 would at the very least require a different front case for my ZF. The 7.3 is non turbo and being a power junky I would almost have to add a turbo sooner or later. If you read the FordCummins.com website it makes you think Cummins is the way to go.

Sell the 7.3 and set the money aside for the Cummins. Take the big rig approach, the motor is a component that gets put into your truck. That component is built by whoever you feel gives you the best performance and value.

[img]/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_cool.gif[/img]you might want to check to be sure, but i have been told that the 460 and the 7.3 use the same bell housing bolt pattern. if that is the case then the swap gets easier. persoanlly i have no preference either way as i like both engines. now about that 460......

I am almost 100% sure the 460 and the diesels are of a different bolt pattern. Doesn't matter now. I have decided to sell the 7.3.
