old timers wanted, i was told that you could improve mileage and performance of the old big blocks by changing the timing gears, is this true? and why? what would you use in place of the original gears? and will this work on newer big blocks? any knowledge will be greatly appeciated! i have a 95 F-250, 4x4, auto, 4:10's

the mid to late 70's smog motors have their cam timing set goofy at the gears. Something like -4* to make for better emissions, but it kills power and mileage. You get a set of "straight up" timing gears and everything gets better. By '95 they probably weren't using the goofy gears as the computer controls had taken over.
