My 87 f-350 been sitting long time, wont start HELP

Hello All,

I have an 87 f350 custom dually, with a 460 eng, and a 4180 holley carburator with a 5 speed OD trans and an intank fuel pump.

Here's my problem!

I tried to start it, got crank no start, I then checked for spark, got spark at the dist cap and at the ign coil. still no start. I then took the fuel line off the carb to test for pressure, results, 0 pressure ( should have 8psi )? I then ran the fuel line into a 1 pint container and cranked engine for about 20 seconds, and it filled the 1 pint cup, ( I'm puzzled ! ) At this point don't know if the fuel pumps works or not (in-tank).

Let's keep in mind! I did rebuild the carb, replaced old fuel with new fuel and all new tune up components and
re-installed before all attemps above where made.

and it still wont start?

I then took cap off distributor to see if the rotor was truning, results, yes; it turned when cranking the eng. The armature and magnetic pick-up looked a little rusted and so did the inside wall of the dist. Then I checked the firing order results, OK

Tried it agian, no start. So I tried to prime the carb w/fuel and all I got was choking, hissing and some back-fire and no start. Now I'm thinking Timming! I'm going to bring the #1 piston Top Dead Center (TDC) then check to see if the dist rotor is facing the #1 wire on the dist cap, maybe that will work, and then I can fine tune once eng starts. I'm running out of ideas to try, I'm at a Lost here... Need all the help I can get for this one.

I also thought, that maybe for some reason, the catalytic converter has clogged up, and maybe thats way I'm getting hissing and choking??? DON'T KNOW! AT THIS POINT ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE

Thanks

AL

HI
It could be in the dizzy did you check for spart at the plugs and when you check for TDC remember it comes up twice on the dampner one TDC for top of the exhgaust stroke and once for the compression stroke.. so one may be 180 deg off when you look at it.. if you didn't pull the dizzy it shouldn't be 180 off.

Post up when you check the timing and I'll give you a test for the fuel pump. You can PM me if I'm not online at the time.

I love troubleshooting the 460's...

For sure...check for spark AT the plugs. If you have it there, shoot a little bit of starter fluid into the carb and try it. If it fires, it's a fuel problem. If it doesn't, it's electrical. Could be a clogged filter if it's fuel.

Rather than Starting Fluid use "Carb Cleaner" The Oreillys type is best but most will work. The napa brand is crap, but still works too.

The Starting Fluid is too volitile in many circumstances and can damage an engine severly during a missfire.

The Carb Cleaner is certainly less combustible, but still allows it to start and run for a second or two.

Maybe stuck needle in the carb?

Shoot a little carb cleaner in or a little gas before you crank, if it fires, smack the float bowl with a screwdriver handle or mallet (be careful LOL)

I bet the needle is stuck and as soon as you get gas flowing it'll be fine
