Clutch Replacement on 68 M-100 with 78 300 & 84 tranny

My 68 M-100 has a 78 300 six in it, mated to a 84 3 speed + overdrive tranny. The clutch is starting to chatter when taking off in first. I'm guessing this means it is time to replace it, unless there is an adjustment I'm not aware of. What type of clutch should I get and how difficult a job is it to replace it?

Get a clutch for the '84. It sounds like your pressure plate is polishing up.

Should'nt give you too much of a hard time replacing it. Ever done a clutch in anything yet?

This will be the first one. I've got a general idea of what needs to be done, but I'll have to read the service manual and see if there are any steps that I don't understand.

Nothin' to it Neal,

But... when you tighten down the pressure plate, do it evenly all around a little by little, in a cross or star pattern, this will prevent any of the splines that the throw out bearing rides on from being distorted.

Good Luck!

Don't forget to re-surface your flywheel or at least hit it real good with some medium emery cloth.

yeah, I figure the old flywheel has been resurfaced at least twice, and maybe more. Might price a new one. If its not too bad, I'll just replace it. I need this truck running, so it might be better to spend a little more and not have to wait to get the flywheel resurfaced.

Neal,
Don't forget to use blue or red "loc-tite" on the flywheel bolts when installing it.
