haveing power issues and minor missing

I have a 79 f-150 with a 1972 302. its 4x4 with a c-6, 3.50 gears, with 32" tires. I have a mostly stock build, excptions being a edelbrok torker II manifold and a stock motorcraft 4300 carb. it has a stock for that year cam timing chain set. stock exhaust, and a thrush glass pack. I am runing the timing at 8 degrees btdc. duraspark dist out of an 1984 truck. I have a startup problem, could be the choke? but it seems to run rich while driving it down the road. there is a slight off idle hesition that clears up when you lay into it. when stone cold it misses and hesitates like the timing is off, and it just loves to start, and imeadiately stall. Im about ready to do something drastic. EFI
Any help would be apreciated
