Re: 77 engine swap need help
Well, funny you mention this; I had long been wanting to do the same swap on my '79 4x4; a couple options {Keep in mind, I am by far no expert, so take my suggestions with an open mind}
If you are looking at doing a newer 460 efi swap, the easiest way is to get a one ton, or a 3/4 ton truck, probably wrecked/rolled, that has a good donar drivetrain...somehting that has not been picked apart too much.
That way, if the thing runs decent, you can pull everything you need, and sell/scrap the rest.
A example of this would be such as this:
A buddy went this route with his late 80's U-haul wrecker...he picked up a late 80's carbed 460 cube moving van, yanked the box off it, and fabricated a twin boom setup for hauling cars. After many miles of service, he ended up smoking the 460 with a spun cam bearing, and got a 3/4 2wd f series from a local police auction and swapped out engine and fuel system, along with the wire harness. Took a little time, but he got stuff situated and the thing worked pretty well. About two years back, he got a newer Uhaul van chassis with a blown 7.3l diesel, and basically did the entire swap again to a newer, heavier duty chassis.
