347 Ranger 4x4

Ok so my buddy at work has a '94 Ranger with an ailing 4.0. He would like to do a 302 swap as soon as the v6 gives up, so I was telling him today how he may be able to build a 347 that would give him stump pulling torque for his firewood runs, great power for the hills and basically 351 grunt in a 302 package.
I have some parts on hand that I was thinking might make a good combination for his motor. Tell me what you think.

'89 5.0 Roller block bored .030" over
Eagle cast steel 347 rotating assembly
Mahle 9:1 pistons
AFR 165 CC street heads
Edelbrock Performer 5.0 intake
BBK 65mm TB
C&L 73mm MAF
'89 Stock HO cam or Comp Extreme 4x4

What do you guys think?

One suggestion, upgrade to GT40 upper/lower intake. This has the same spec as the Cobra intake, but less cost. Benefit is with greater breathing, you will get better gas mileage in cruise mode. I upped my GT from 19 to 24 mpg with the intake and going with 2.5" offroad pipe and a cone filter intake. You may want to stick with a stock intake box in as 4X4, but use the K&N filter. Mine still has stock cam and runs great. The GT40 intake can handle up to 400 HP, but you are not close to that with stock cam. Good luck.

I think you would be throwing away money with the AFR's and a stock cam. Take the money you would spend on an over priced set of heads and buy something like some roush 200's , a custom cam then use the rest of the money so he can buy plenty of beer why you are trying to jam it all in his truck.

Re: 347 Ranger 4x4

As far as the heads and cam go I have to respectfully disagree. He doesnt want a high revving racing motor, he's looking to make tons of torque down low. From what I've heard, there's no better cam for making low end torque than the stock 5.0 HO cam- especially the stock cam from pre mass air cars as they had a better torque producing profile. As far as the heads go, I already have access to them at a cheap price, and they seem a good choice for good low end torque production due to the small runners creating good low lift port velocity.
