80-96 rear gas tank dimension

I have a 71 that is close to being a driver. Like most trucks of this era, I have the gas tank behind the seat. I'd like to remove it to get some more storage space in the cab. Some people have used a 60' mustang tank at the spare tire area, but the filler comes up through the bed floor. Not exactly practical if you have the bed loaded.

Some of the '80 to 96 (I think) trucks have a tank that mounts at the rear of the bed, with the spare tire mounted under the tank. The filler comes out the side of the box. If someone has this tank and can measure length, width, height I would appreciate it. I would like the dimensions of the tank, and also the width of the flange.

I just measured mine, it is approx. 6" High, 35" Wide (1" gap on each side in between frame), and 27" Long (front to back)). The diameter of the gas inlet is 2".

Read something somewhere about the High Boy 4X4's using the Ranger tanks to remount their tanks in the rear. The High Boys have a narrower frame than the rest of the 73 to 79 line. Sorry I don't have any measurements. Check the Ford Truck Enthusiast site, lots of info.

I think I would have to use the high boy tank. My frame is about 33" wide, so it is a couple inches too narrow.
