Angry F150 4.9 More Power?

I pull a 4 horse trailer with my 1990 F150 4.9 6 cyl. It needs some more power. Is there any "bolt on" parts to help it out?

Maybe a K&N cold air intake, you could put different gears in the back, but I don't think there is much out there. I have seen where some guy actually turbo-charged his 4.9L, thats pretty extreme though.

If memory serves me thous engines were not rated for towing.

Clifford Performance :: Make 6 = 8

they have some nice looking headers, dual outlets like that are good for towing. not too bad of price either. hooked up to a 2.5 single exhaust with a not so restrictive muffler, might make people think you have a V-8.

there is some potential in those engines, just not many aftermarket parts out there for them.

Re: F150 4.9 More Power?

I have the 4.9 in my f150. It is a pretty torquey motor. Not a speed demon,just good torque. Have you thought about splitting the exhaust. From what I remember the headers split down the middle and would lead to a dual exhaust. That might free up some power. I pull a 22 foot trailer with my rig. It takes me a little longer to go over the passes in Washington. Slows down to about 45 mph. It will cruise 70 out on the flats no problem. If I drive it 55 and in fourth staying out of 5th with my manual trans I get 17.5 mpg out on the flats.
