changing the rear seal on a 351m

o.k. guys and gals, i have a 79 f150 4x4 with (of course) a 351m,4spd tranny and a big old leaky rear seal (barley starting to leak) i have changed out a few rear seals on various trucks (4x4's mostly) without pulling the engine out.
that being said i was looking at everybodies favorite manual (haynes, bleh) and it says i need to yank the engine, loosen all main caps etc. etc. .
my question is, can i just pull the pan in the truck, (i have had it off like that before), and remove the rear cap and change it? or do i need to call a friend to help pull the hood off?

yes the bottom end is fine, it's just age eating at the seal. thanx!

I think that may be a 2 piece seal which as you know you can do through removing the oil pan
Call the parts store

Re: changing the rear seal on a 351m

yes it is a 2 piece seal. it just funny that all the other manuals i have say to just pull the pan and cap, and this particular manual (but only for the 351m) says i have to pull flywheel, loosen all main caps and slightly lift the crank to change it out, but only for the 351m.
i'm going to give it a go this weekend anyway and see if it can be done, i think it can. even if i have to pull the engine, it only takes an hour or so with a couple of friends, beer, pizza....mmmmm pizza.....
