351W motor oil pressure

I have a 1990 F-150 4x4 reg cab long box 5.8L. 38,000 original miles. 2 years ago I did a cam swap to the Comp cams EFI cam for my motor and put on some headers and flowmaster american thunder exhaust. I put in a high-volume oil pump after having distributor gear failure last summer. A sliver of metal wedged itself in the oil pump housing stopping my oil pump shaft and shearing off the distributor gear pin. At that point I didnt have the oil pressure gauge installed but put it in this summer just for kicks. just a summit 270 deg sweep gauge. $20. My oil pressure at cold start on 5w-30 quaker state motor oil is around 45psi. At hot idle its about 20 and at hot on the highway its about 30-35. I think thats kinda low for this motor.

Anyone have any clues or insight as to why this seems low to me? I live in the U.P. of michigan and its been subzero up here so thats why I am using 5w-30. In the summer I use 10w-30. Did I make an oops by putting in a high-volume pump? After my event this summer I put in an MSD billet distributor with an iron pump gear.

Any help or suggestions would help.
Thanks

Re: 351W motor oil pressure

Maybe a bit low compared to what i see on my 351w. (393)
The gage could be off a bit.
But 10lbs for every 1000k hot is about right. So just cruising i think 35 lbs is ok.

Re: 351W motor oil pressure

Thats the thing; at idle my oil pressure is at about 20 and then rises to about 30-35 with RPM but never goes over that even when the engine is hot all the way up to 4500rpm. I've been reading some threads on faulty pressure bypass springs in the melling oil pumps. Is it possible this is an issue? Could I have a stuck bypass spring?

Re: 351W motor oil pressure

Whether it's low or not is not really the question I think. The question is :is it a problem or not? I don't see a problem with that kind of oil pressure. You might want to look at it this way: a high volume oil pump doesn't necessarily mean you have to have high oil pressure. You have a thin oil in there, and you may have some larger than ideal bearing clearances. But the fact that it never drops is a sign that you are getting good FLOW and 60psi doesn't do you any good if it drops to 10 or the oil isn't getting to where it should. BTW, if you were to throw in a heavier motor oil and your oil pressure were to rise significantly, it would point to a bearing clearance issue, whereas no change might indicate a pump change could raise pressure.
