Ignition Questions....

I've searched guys to no avail. Sorry..

I've got an '83 F150 with a 351W. Truck ran fine 3 years ago, needed a timing chain, so one was installed and the truck never got put back together..

I recently got the truck and put everything back together and turns over fine, but I have NO SPARK.. I've replaced the Ignition Module, Coil, Starter Relay, Ignition Relay.. Still nothing. I have power going to the Coil.

I recently found out that I didn't put the Crank Sensor back in place and was told that it would cause a no Spark. Is that true does anyone know??
I havn't had a chance to try it since I put it back in place.

I'm baffled and really have no clue where to check next. Are there any other relays or fuses throughout the ignition system that would cause no spark?

Thanks for your helps guys!!!

CRANK SENSOR

No crank sensor, no signal to injection system OR to the ignition system...

Try it and you might be suprised.

Re: Ignition Questions....

Well,

I put the Crank Sensor back in and tried to fire it up today. Still a no go.

I do have spark coming out of the Coil now, but not very much and only when you first turn the key.

I put a spark plug in the coil wire and grounded it to see if I had spark, there was, but ONLY when you first turned the key, and it was off to the side of the spark plug on the bottom not in the center like it should be. Right?

It was and ugly orange spark too, not blue or anything like you'd expect.

Is there a better way to see if there is spark from the coil on? Or am I just doing it wrong?

The dist. that I have has NO Electronic wiring going to it at all... Module is on the wheel well, '83 does call out for my dist. but they had to do some searching. Is there anything past the coil, that is supposed to draw spark from the coil? Or is there anything Before the coil that would cause it to have a weak spark?

With the key on I have about 7.5V on the + of the Coil. That's about right isn't it?

Any Ideas? Anyone?

Btw, is not Fuel Injected Either.

check the rod and wiring thru your columb to the columb harness plug under the columb by the brake pedal. seems like your grounding out. if the switch itself is wore out your ignition system can be affected. check the keyswitch itself.

Re: Ignition Questions....

What color grommet is on the ignition module. If it only has 2 plug connectors in unplug the one with two wires. One of the wires feed the module should have 12 volts with the key on and the other should have 12 volts with the engine cranking over. ( plug 2 wire back in) I think on that set up you should have 12 volts at coil. Make sure you have a good battery. Any of the computed engines need a good 12 volts to wok properly. Do you have the crank sensor fully seated. ( it is what gives the signal to fire the ignition). If all that passes then put a 12 volt test light on the neg side of the coil and have some one crank engine from the key not the solenoid. It should flicker. if it does you may have a bad new coil. Let me know what results you get.

Re: Ignition Questions....

no problem dude. hope it helps you out. I like those years of ford truck but.....their electronics can be a nightmare.

you might check the elctronic ignition "brain box" module on the drivers side fender well. it fires your distributor, has two main wiring plugs comming out of it. one goes to the dist. the other plugs into the main harness. if its bad, it will give moderate spark to the coil and dist. but will not fire the ignition system. its a sealed, aluminum unit.

What type of fuel delivery does it have? Is a 7200 VV?

To diagnose it properly, you will need a shop manual for the truck for that year.
Listen. You have an EEC-III and DURASPARK III system(s). It cannot be diagnosed like a DURASPARK II system. This system incorporates an EEC module. One was used for feedback carbs and another for CFI.

I am ASS-U-MING you have a 7200 VV feedback?
