ignition problems....

I have a 77 150 that just died going down the road a week ago. Will not run...engine tries to start, but as soon as I release the key from start to on - it dies. I thought the ignition switch was bad, so I replaced that..still does the same thing. I am my wits end...any suggestions?

Re: ignition problems....

Sounds like bad Duraspark module. Check the two wire going to the module. Should be one red and one white. With key in run position you should have power at red one. If you do then ignition switch and probably module is bad.

Re: ignition problems....

Thanks all. I have replaced the ignition switch - it did not solve the problem. Someone had suggested an open ballast resistor...i was looking around the module. I notice the red and white wires had "touched"...looks like the insulation on both had worn away and they touched - wire to wire. So i taped them up and pulled the away from each other. Now, I try to start it and i get no fire at all - while key is in the start position. That was the only change i made. Did this short out the module?

Re: ignition problems....

Check the coil (-) terminal for pulse with a test light while you crank the engine, if the light doesn't blink, the module may be fubar'ed. To check the D-Spark stator sensor, using the diagram below, disconnect the 4-wire connector from the module and measure the resistance between the wires at the distributor connector that mate with the Orange and Purple wires of the module. If the resistance is not between 400Ω - 1300Ω..... the stator sensor needs to be replaced.
