77 Ford F-100 460 Install - Engine Angle

Okay guys. here's my nightmare. I'm installing a 460 in my 77 Ford truck, in place of the original 351M. I have ran into a couple of problems. The oversized rear sump pan ended up resting on the steering linkage so I had to raise the engine up 5/16ths of an inch in the front. Tried adding a spacer underneath the motor mounts to raise it but ended up cutting and rewelding the motor mounts. The spacer changed the geometry too much for the mounts to bolt up correctly. This helped create the engine angle problem. The carburetor is nowhere near level. I have jacked up the tailstock on the transmission with a floor jack until it touched the top of the tunnel and ended up with about 3-1/2 degrees of angle. I can put a 1 inch spacers under the rear crossmember and still have some tunnel clearance and about 4 degrees of angle. I have ordered a 5 degree carburetor wedge plate that I believe will sort out leveling the carburetor but now I will be getting close to the hood. Anyone been through this before or have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.
RK

Unless I'm missing something the 77 pickup should take a front sump pan?

Yes, normally it would be a front sump pan installation. Engine is actually a 460 stroker (521 cu in.) and most everyone I consulted with including the engine builder recommended an extra capacity oil pan. The only way to achieve this was with a rear sump pan. Theres not enough room in the front. Pan is a Moroso unit. I guess the point I was originally trying to make is, I've only raised the front of the engine a little over a quarter inch or so, 5/16ths by my measurement. Should I be worried about the engine angle enough to raise the transmission or just install the wedge plate and be done with it?

Re: 77 Ford F-100 460 Install - Engine Angle

1 - 77 F100 4x2 or 4x4??

2 - where are the pictures?

3 - what make and model rear sump pan?

4 - why not think of modifying the steering linkage instead of reworking the entire front drivetrain? instead of a straight linkage, make a piece that has a dip in it to account for the engine...

Re: 77 Ford F-100 460 Install - Engine Angle

Truck is a 2 wheel drive. Pan is an eight quart version of a Milodon or Moroso, can't remember which but its the same pan. I removed the tabs from the motor mounts and welded in new ones (1/4" instead of the original 3/16ths) with the mounting holes moved 5/16th of an inch down which raised the motor. In the back I boxed in two pieces of 1" X 2" rectangular tubing and slid them under the rear cross-member to raise the transmission up and correct the engine angle as much as possible. I then installed a 5 degree wedge plate under the carburetor and it is now within an eight inch of being level. Its just a little bit high in the back which I think should be fine. See pictures. Thanks,
Ryan
