2wd to 4wd converson

I have a 1993 F-150 that I would like to convert to a 4wd. Is it just a matter of getting a front axle, transfer case, drive shafts, and cutting a hole in the floor for the 4wd shifter or is there more to it that I'm not thinking about? About the transfer case, would I need to get a whole different tranny or would my 5 speed (4 with overdrive, however you want to look at it) manual tranny, work? If my existing tranny would work then would I just be able to bolt a transfer case right up to it or is there some mods I would have to make?
It takes big nuts to follow us.

Not saying it isnt do able, but it would be easier if you bought a 4x4 and left the 2X alone.

Need front axle dana 44 with same gears as back. Transfer case for that year were electric shift but could go with a manual, need 4x4 tranny for the transfer case. Drive shafts from junk yard. Longer speedo cable. May need some suspension parts if you want straight axle. Then theres always the things that we always overlook.

Just alot of work.

Re: 2wd to 4wd converson

Like Chas said it is doable,I did it years ago.If you stay with the coils in front you need 4X specific trailing arms and frame mounts, the steering is differant, you need a track bar,you need a mount for the transfer case, you will most likely need driveshafts made. You need a Ford specific front end made after 1978 for disc brakes and also half or three quarter ton axle to match the rear. You might be better off buying a same year chassis that the body is a right-off !
