Justin Burcham Runs Incredible 8.02 At 170 MPH At NMRA Bowling Green

Ford’s 5.0L Coyote powerplant has shown itself to be quite a capable performer since its introduction. As is typical with the Mustang crowd, there has been a large group of racers trying to earn the “First To The” titles, with Justin Burcham’s JPC Racing in Maryland currently holding the “Fastest Naturally Aspirated Coyote”, “Fastest NA Stock Longblock Coyote”, and “Fastest Stock Longblock Coyote”. Now, they can add “Fastest Street-Driven Coyote” period to that list, as Justin Burcham rocketed to an incredible 8.02 at 170 MPH on a test pass at the NMRA‘s World Finals this past weekend in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

That’s not the best part, though. It might be difficult to believe, but this car is actually street-driven. Yes, you read that correctly. Burcham’s crew actually drove this car from their Maryland home base to Mustang Week in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina earlier this year to prove that the car is in fact streetable. How is this possible? Burcham has built the car featuring a Rich Groh Racing Engines powerplant, one of JPC’s own turbo systems featuring a 76mm Precision turbocharger, and a recently-installed Powerglide transmission.

If you can believe it, this car still has every factory engine accessory save for the air conditioning, and competes at a whopping 3,450 pounds on 275/60/15 Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial Pro drag radial tires.

In an attempt to be the first street-driven 5.0 in the 7’s, Burcham battled back and forth all weekend with the crew from Evolution Performance in Pennsylvania in the NMRA’s 5.0 shootout. Despite going out early in the event thanks to a faulty starter fuse, Burcham was able to click off his record-setting elapsed time in a test pass following the 5.0 shootout.

We’re sure this car will be at the World Cup Finals at Maryland International Raceway in just a few short weeks to take advantage of the cool fall air and incredible MIR track surface – will we finally see a 7 second pass with a real street car? We’ll be there covering the event with Same-Day Coverage for Dragzine, so stay tuned! The event takes place over the weekend of November 1-3, 2013.
