No Prep racing requires a racer to have a certain mindset and skill set — they must be a gambler, race strategist, and even cowboy to be able to conquer the often tricky track surfaces they face. Most of the big names that are winning races in No Prep have quite a bit of experience with street and no prep racing, but not 2016 Dirty South No Prep Series True Street champion Nick Kallergis. Before 2016, Kallergis had never run a racing series for points, let alone done any No Prep racing, but his hard work paid off with a series title, and he’s ready for another in 2017.
To say that Kallergis was not experienced when it came to No Prep racing is an understatement, but that didn’t stop him from terrorizing the True Street class. “I had never run a No Prep race until January of 2016. I had no clue on tuning the car’s chassis, driving the car competitively, or power management. My background was really in street racing and that’s about it.”
Kallergis earned the DSNP title behind the wheel of his 1986 Ford Mustang with a 25.3 chassis from MC Fab. The car uses a stock-style suspension with Santhuff coilovers at each corner of the car. Powering the Mustang is a 302 cubic-inch Ford Racing Coyote engine that uses stock cams and heads with a pair of Precision 64/66 turbos providing the boost. Behind the Coyote mill is a Century Automotive-built transmission that uses a Reid case and billet internals.
This season has started out slow for Kallergis since his Mustang has been undergoing some off-season updates. He anticipates the car will be finished soon and he plans on making the San Antonio race provided everything is ready. That downtime is pushing Kallergis hard because he really loves the DSNP series. “We like racing DSNP because of the competitive atmosphere. The DSNP organization, itself, consists of racers and has been good to everyone and has always kept sportsmanship in mind,” Kallergis explains.
When Kallergis gets his Mustang back the rest of the True Street class had better be ready because he’s prepared to repeat as champion in the DSNP. “The goal for this season is the same as last season’s goal: to win every round with safety and sportsmanship in mind. We should do well this year with all of the knowledge and experience on our team that was gained last year,” Kallergis says.
