What’s A Remarkably Original Cougar Worth At Auction?

The Ford Mustang’s luxurious cousin, the Mercury Cougar, is often sadly overlooked in the collector-car world. Even with their luxury styling, Cougars never won the hearts of as many enthusiasts as the everyman’s pony car did. However, they still remain under-appreciated, underrated, and somewhat undervalued.

The attention to detail on this Mercury Cougar is impressive. First off, any car that can star in a 45-minute walk around video obviously has nothing to hide. The car still features its original engine that has only been out of the car once in the ’90s for a repaint, fresh gaskets, and a rebuild on all the accessories. The key suspension components were checked out along with the basically spotless drivetrain. The rest of what you see are just well kept, original parts. Its really mind-blowing that a car in this shape isn’t a $100,000 restoration. (Photo Credit: Bring A Trailer)

With this in mind, we always take notice when a Cougar brings good money at auction, especially one as special as this 1968 Grecian Gold Poly XR-7. The car is a surprisingly original example with well over 100,000 miles on the clock. This car was no garage queen. In fact, was driven daily for years From looking at the Cougar, you would expect a complete restoration it only received light cosmetic and suspension restorations and still retains most all of its original parts.

Although the Cougar shares numerous parts with its Mustang cousin, the car’s interior is really what sets it apart. A woodgrain dash, a full center console, and luxurious bucket seats give the Cougar a more upscale personality.

The car sold at no reserve on bringatrailer.com for an impressive $30,250 dollars. You can check out the listing for yourself here.

Jeff Southard

Growing up with a dad who loved Corvettes, I was destined to be a gearhead from day one. Beyond that, my dad owned an auto parts business for over 25 years. There, I learned the automotive basics as a child, then began my professional career working there after high school. From Corvettes and Superbirds to Hemis and Cobra Jets, my dad has owned a little of everything over the years, so I've had my chance to get some quality seat time behind the wheel of some rare, unique, and sometimes, just odd automobiles. I have owned my share of toys, including over 20 Mustangs. I guess to make a long story short, if you look up "car crazy" you will probably find my photo listed pretty close to it!
