PRI 2015: Mark Williams’ Bulletproof Aluminum Driveshafts

MW Driveshafts 01Mark Williams Enterprises is in the business of power delivery. They offer a full range of high-quality racing axles, spools, rear end housings, and driveshafts. This year at PRI, Mark Williams has highlighted some of that quality with their high-strength 6061 and 7075 Aluminum driveshafts. We spoke with the company’s own Travis Podratz, and he told us a little about what makes their aluminum driveshafts stand apart.

He began by explaining that aluminum is not a weldable material – it must be bonded. The heat from welding breaks down the material, causing structural problems and weakening the aluminum. Therefore, Mark Williams uses their patented ‘Accu-bond’ bonding procedure when manufacturing their driveshafts. The procedure simply involves channelling an epoxy into the shaft and allowing it to cure. Simple though it is, this process provides the driveshaft with incredible strength and stability versus welding, in both the ends and the tube itself.

MW Driveshafts 02Once bonded and cured, the driveshafts undergo rigorous testing. They are torqued to 7500 ft./lbs. and tested on Mark Williams’ in-house balancer. The balancer spins the shafts up to 10,000 rpm, at various operating angles. In this way, customers are guaranteed driveshafts that will withstand just about anything within their application.

Mark Williams offers two grades of aluminum for their driveshafts: 6061 and 7075. According to Podratz, the only differences between the 6061 and 7075 shafts are strength and weight. He stated that the 6061 was just slightly lighter than the 7075 and was designed for sub-1,000 horsepower applications (versus the 7075’s several thousand horsepower capabilities).

Regardless of which Mark Williams driveshaft you choose, however, you’re guaranteed superb-quality. From the yokes, to the joints, to the shaft itself, Mark Williams expertly manufactures and tests all their products, helping your car perform at its absolute best.
