Video: Tilton Engineering’s Adjustable Motorsport Pedals

Getting the most out of a racing cockpit requires two things which might elude the casual racer. Not only should the driver try to centralize their weight as much as possible to improve the distribution (this matters most in a lighter car), but the driver needs to be oriented to their wheel, shifter, and pedals in such a way that they can manipulate them with complete comfort and precision.

A proper set of racing pedals can aid in these aims. They provide drivers with the option of mounting the seat further back, and for instance, in the case of a thoroughbred racing car, the pedals can be brought back to meet the driver. Additionally, by adjusting the pedal position to complement the width or curvature of a driver’s foot, a driver can brake without fear of accidentally depressing the throttle, or heel-toe with comfort and accuracy. For reasons like these, a high-end pedal setup helps make a driver one with his machine.

Tilton Engineering‘s lineup of products ranges from the high-end to the very high-end, and all of the listed kits feature brake-bias adjusters, adjustable pedal placement, and a selection of mounting positions to accommodate a variety of different vehicles. Those interested in retaining the feel of their floor-hinged 911 can order their pedals to replicate this peculiar kind of feel and movement—though the Tilton 600-Series pedals provide far more in terms of adjustability than the stock Porsche pieces ever could.

To repeatedly find the limit in braking zones, maximizing the action of these pedals is a must. Oil-impregnated bronze bushings in the pedal pivots smoothen the action of these pedals and provide the driver with the maximum in modulation. Repeatable, confidence-inspiring braking requires a dependable movement and a reassuring feel, and this is attained by negating lateral movement through wave washers on either side of each pedal.

Tilton’s 800-Series pedals take the game even further with a spherical-bearing-type balance bar that limits horizontal movement, PTFE-coated aluminum clevises for reduced friction, and a thicker-than-normal balance bar for greater pedal feel. The lightweight forged-aluminum pedal arms provide great feedback and withstand a beating, which is good, since the pedal pressure with some high-end, wing-clad racing cars requires more of a kick than a push.

Perhaps calling the 800-Series pedals “mid-tier” would be a gross understatement, since they provide 95 percent of the performance of their top-tier line but with several economically-priced pieces. For the uber-discerning racers who spare no expense with their tailor-made racing cars, there is the 900-Series pedals.

The lightest and most focused of Tilton’s lineups, the 900-Series have some very trick-tech for the utmost in consistent, progressive, detail-rich braking. The pivot-mount master cylinders are mounted on spherical bearings, so they pivot with the stroke of the pedal! Additionally, the pedal ratio can be changed without having to replace the master cylinder. For those concerned with the utmost of braking performance, the last Nth of refinement in the braking process can be had with this trick kit. Whichever route you take, the addition of racing pedals makes a massive difference in confidence, feel, and precision at the limit of grip—things which every racer can appreciate.
