It’s Friday, and that means time to get things rolling at the 22nd annual NMRA Spring Break Shootout at Bradenton Motorsports Park, in Bradenton, Florida. We’re on the ground to get all the action as racers make a few test hits today and prepare to qualify later this afternoon. We’ll be here all weekend long until the event is over to bring readers the latest coverage of one of the biggest all-Ford racing events of the year. The only thing better than being here, is following our coverage, so check back all weekend long.
2015 Factory Stock Champion Matt Amrine is here to defend his title and has made the switch from the T-5 transmission to a TKO from Liberty for this season in an effort to avoid breakage that plagued him the last two events of 2015. He run a 2 valve SVO head engine combo. New for the class this year is allowance of the Mickey Thompson 275 Pro Bracket Radial tire after the Gen 1 ET Street Radial was discontinued.Bill Dudley has owned this 1965 Mustang since high school in 1992 and is based out of St Pete, Florida. He runs a Nelson Competition built 410 ci Windsor topped with TEA ported Hi Port heads and a Saturday Night Special plate System from Induction Solutions backed by a C4 trans and Gear Vendors Overdrive. Dudley is looking to compete for the 10.0 Index in True Street on Saturday.Manny Buginga is back at it after an eight year absence from the racing scene with this LX Mustang. He is running a 380 inch small Ford from Nelson Competition fed by a 94 MM Precision Turbo and backed by a Proformance Racing Transmission. Nick Bruder is tuning the Fuel Tech engine management software and the team had yet to make a pass when we caught up to them in the lanes earlier.

Dwayne Barbarbee is sporting a new engine this year from Kuntz and Company fed by the class legal 98 MM turbo after switching back and forth from a supercharger in 2015. The team tested in Denton and Shrieveport prior to this event with good results. Russel Stone purchased Kuntz and Co. just this January and is working with the team there to advance their power adder combos while transitioning. Their friend Paul Soliz was planning on competing with the NMRA this season but was tragically killed in a drag racing accident so Barbaree and the team are making sure he rides along in spirit with them this year.

Joe Coffeman DeCaria is debuting a new car sporting an MPR built Modular 302 force fed by an F1A Procharger and tuned by Ken Bjones at Palm Beach Dyno with cage and chassis work from Tig Vision. They have tested with promising results and are still working out the new car. Wild Bill Devine was set to make some test/exhibition runs today but found some oil pressure fluctuations in the data logging. He checked the filter to find some copper and the crew pulled the pan for a bearing inspection.Vinnie Palazzolo has been running X275 based out of the Philly area and is here competing with the NMRA for the first time this weekend in Street Outlaw. He runs a Bennett Racing small Ford with a 98 MM Precision turbo at 3200 pounds, a change from the Pro Mod 85 he ran in X275. He did some tuning on the dyno just last night at Pressurized Solutions and is using the new Haltech Elite 2500 engine management, he has yet to make a pass today.Valerie Clements is done for the weekend after some valve to piston interference damaged several valves.Aaron Bates finished seventh in the 2015 Renegade points and has stepped up his engine program this year with a new top end from Total Engine Airflow looking for more power.

Tyler Eichhorn is debuting a new car for Coyote Stock this weekend using a Ram clutch and G Force T5 transmission. Tyler struggled hooking the car testing and found a broken strut. A quick call to Mark Menscer got them fixed up and a new pair will be here in the morning to get them back on track. Demon Motorsports did the fabrication and chassis. Joe Guertin is running Coyote Modified out of CRE Performance in Purt St Lucie, Florida with Chet Caminita as crew chief. The team tested in Orlando recently scoring what they think is the first seven second run for the class with a 7.87. He runs an MPR engine with a Procharger F1A 91MM tuned by Cal Hartline and backed by an ATF power glide transmission and converter.

Street Outlaw
Dwayne Barbaree sits on top of VP Racing Fuels Street Outlaw after one qualifier with a 4.52 at 166 MPH.Manny Buginga ripped off a 4.58 at 160 MPH in his first full pass to the eighth mile in the car during today’s test session. He qualified second with a 4.87 at 117 after clicking it early.
Renegade
Adam Arndt leads Edelbrock Renegade by a substantial margin with a 7.481 at 181 with five cars making it for round one qualifying today.Last Year’s Renegade Champion Frank Varella races out of Hellion Racing and sits fourth with a 7.86.
Coyote Modified
Procharger Coyote Modified had seven cars for round one qualifying with Jeff Polivka from Gainesville, Virginia putting his 2013 Boss on top with an 8.18 at 166 MPH with Joe Cram a close second running a 7.23 at 167. Haley James (pictured) put up an 8.43 at 155 landing fourth in class today.Johnny Lightning sits third so far with an 8.36, he set high MPH so far running a whopping 169.77 through the top end.
Pure Street
Tommy Godfrey leads G-Force Transmissions Pure Street with a 9.37 at 137.63 MPH, a full three MPH better than second place qualifier William Gimbel. Derek Downs, C.J. Reese and Jimmy Wilson round out the field with two more sessions left on Saturday for the racers to improve position.
Factory Stock
John Leslie Jr. pulled the wheels hard on his way to a 10.79 at 124 in American Racing Headers Factory Stock landing third in class.Frank Brancaccio hails out of Canfield, Ohio with his 1991 Factory Stock Mustang. He sits fourth for today with a 10.98 at 123 MPH.
Coyote Stock
Race Pages Coyote Stock has fifteen cars on the sheet after one session with Michael Washington leading the pack in his 1993 Cobra with a 10.25 at 147 MPH The weather is looking good this weekend for racers to put up some impressive numbers and Coyote Stock is a class to watch with car set up being a large factor in making good runs with the sealed engine class.Longtime NMRA racer Carlos Sobrino sits seventh in class with a 10.38 at 128.

Ford Cobra Jet Showdown has thirteen cars qualified for Saturday’s class eliminations with Mike Harris leading the field where racers are qualified by reaction time.
We are getting started Saturday with great racing weather here in Bradenton kicking things off with Ford Muscle before getting into the bracket cars with heads up qualifying starting at 11 with VP Racing Fuels Street Outlaw.
Randy Seward put up an 8.47 at 163 yesterday which is a good run for him. He swapped to the new Haltech Elite 2500 over the winter and was at the Mickey Thompson trailer this morning getting a fresh set of 295/65 Drag Radials installed for today’s QA1 True Street presented by Muscle Mustangs competition.

Phil Hines got here just this morning sporting last years iron block combo after cracking the new aluminum block at Lights Out 7 just two weeks ago in Georgia. Also on board is a new sponsor for 2016, All Hustle Motorsports. Hines installed carbon doors and lexan windows preparing for this season dropping near 200 pounds along with some other modifications.

Brad Gussler owns this ECO Boost powered world record holding Mustang with a 10.58 at 129. He runs a SCT tuned CPE built engine fed by a Precision 60MM turbo in the Watson Racing prepped chassis. The trans and converter is from Circle D and the car rolls on Race Star wheels with stopping power from Aerospace 4 wheel disc brakes. Mountune Performance is also a major sponsor of Gussler's racing efforts.

We stopped by Watson Racing this morning and spoke with Sales and Marketing Manager John Phillips. The team has their brand new, first off the 2016 line Cobra Jet on the property and has already ran a 8.40 at 161, the fastest legal Stock Eliminator pass to date. Watson Racing is the shop Ford tagged to build the Cobra Jet cars and they also offer assorted parts and chassis components for the late model cars from the S197 bodies forward. Company owner Chuck Watson Sr. handles driving duties and he is also entered in True Street and will be running in the grudge night after qualifying. Ford Cobra Jet Showdown

We had thirteen cars in the Cobra Jet Showdown with Mike Harris going number one qualifier based on reaction time. Carl Tasca and Chuck Watson has the misfortune of going red in round one ending their day early. Missy Laughridge and Rod Heltzel would advance in the first two pairs out this morning. David Swanson, John Calvert, Anthony Bongiovanni and Kenneth Miele would also advance to round two with Harris on the earned single.
Round Two would also see two drivers foul out sending Calvert and Heltzel on to the semi finals. Bongiovanni and Swanson had identical reaction times with Bongiovanni getting the round win with an 8.66 to 8.73 Miele had the single this round and would face Calvert next round.
Calvert had a small leak from the inter cooler tank due to the valve not being fully shut. Miele showed great sportsmanship in waiting but it cost him the round.Bongiovanni took the starting line advantage over Heltzel .059 to a .073 but couldn’t hold off Heltzel’s 8.77 at 150, .11 over Index to his 8.66 on an 8.52. Calvert put an .016 reaction to his advantage scoring a win to face Rod Heltzel in the final where he pulled an .022 light to Calvert’s .086. They were dialed 8.66 and 8.67 respectively with Heltzel going 8.72 at 152 scoring the event win on reaction time to the quicker but losing 8.68 at 156.
Qualifying Results
Dwayne Barbaree stands on top of VP Racing Fuels Street Outlaw making an impression this weekend with the new Kuntz power as the only car in the 4.30’s running a 4.398 at 167.97 MPH.Manny Buginga landed second with a 4.50 in his first time out with the new car. You can bet Buginga and the Bruder Brothers will be improving the performance for eliminations tomorrow.
Edelbrock Renegade
Adam Arndt’s 7.48 at 181 from Friday’s session held on for top qualifier in Edlebrock Renegade for the Orefield, PA racer.Alton Clements (far lane) landed fourth in the Renegade field with a 7.817 at 174.82, just behind Frank Varela’s 7.814 at 178.
ProCharger Coyote Modified
In Procharger Coyote Modified Joe Guertin jumped to number one today with the first seven second pass in competition running a 7.928 at 171 MPH for the MPR powered CRE Performance AFT Speed 85 Mustang.Jeff Polivka was a close second scoring an 8.039 at 169.Johnny Lightning was running well and wowing the crowd with wheels up launches this weekend. He sits third in class.
G-Force Transmissions Pure Street
William Gimbel scored top qualifier in G-Force Transmissions Pure Street running a 9.52 at 134.89 with Tommy Godfrey dropping to third with an improved from Friday 9.70.Teddy Weaver did not make any qualifying runs Friday, he ran a nice 9.64 at 138 earning third qualifier.
American Racing Headers Factory Stock
James Meredith moved to top qualifier over Matt Amrine with a 10.61 at 121.08. He also has top MPH from a different run netting 125.61 MPH, well under last years class record.

John Leslie Jr. landed third in Factory Stock qualifying with a personal best 10.798 at 124. He switched to a Tremek TKO prepped by Liberty Transmission and an ACT clutch set up by Bruce Hemminger. John tells us the maintenance on the Coyote engine much less making for an easier weekend and less valvetrain issues than the pushrod engines he ran several years ago. Tim Matherly and the MV Performance team who has been essential in getting me where I am at along with Bruce Hemminger.
Race Pages Coyote Stock
Shiftin Shane Stymeist is the Race Pages Coyote Stock number one qualifier with a 10.235 at 127 MPH bumping Michael Washington down to second with a 10.251 after he was unable to improve his ET today.Mike Bowen has this sweet 71 Maverick based out of Girard, Pennsylvania and qualified.

Larry Albright had a wild ride in QA1 True Street this afternoon after a big wheel stand drug the chute mount and set the car crooked in the air. He slid to right at the eighth on the roof before contacting the wall. He was out quickly and ok, the car not so much. Hopefully it's not seriously damaged and he can make repairs to this chassis.

We have yet another great weekend of racer here for the 2016 NMRA season opener with over 400 cars here on Saturday and the biggest Bradenton event in several years.Chris Parisi has been racing his V6 since 2007 winning a Fun Ford Championship in Ultra Stang and the 2009 Super Stang title with the NMRA. A rule change for 2010 forced him out and into the driver seat of a JDM Engineering sponsored Roush leading to another championship, this time with the quickest car in the class instead of the slowest.Shelby Mather out of Ocala, Florida earned top qualifying honors in Race Pages Ford Muscle running in A/FM which is the top class with a 10.50 Index. He runs a 531 W with Edelbrock plate system backed by the notoriously unreliable C4 transmission which caused him to miss two rounds of qualifying swapping to the on hand spare.

Mike Motycka and his cousin Rob are here after taking about four years off from racing and competing right where they left off in Detriot Lock Truck and Lightning and Open Comp. Mike scored a class Championship back in 2008 and is qualified number three running 11.80s this weekend using a Ford Racing crate 460 engine. Rob runs the 88 Mustang which was formerly campaigned in NHRA Super Stock powered by an NA 550 big Ford. The Mustang is a barn find the Motycka Racing crew started bracket racing with back in 1998 before moving to the NMRA.

Jerry Porsch wins the cool factor award this weekend with his Sunbeam Tiger entered in QA1 True Street sporting a 380 cubic inch Windsor with rear mounted twin turbos. The car runs mid tens and is backed by a Powerglide trans from Gary Gonzales feeding the power back to an 8/34 Chrysler rear with chassis fabrication by Chase Griffen.
Final Results
Muscle Mustangs and Fast Ford Spring Break Shootout
The Spring Break shootout takes the top sixteen from QA1 True Street paired up on a sportsman ladder with the overall class winner Randy Seward racing number nine Edgar Negrod and putting up an 8.47 at 158 to Negrod’s 8.97 at 152. Second place racer Michael Jovanis based in Wall, New Jersey put up an 8.66 at 163 over Sergio Rojas out of Royal Palm Beach, Florida. The top five cars were all in the eights in round one with Oviedo, Florida’s Kurtis Forsgers advancing on an opponent broke bye.

In round two action number four qualifier Raul Torres paired up with Alexys Garcia sending him home with an 8.86 at 140 MPH, Forsgers advanced over Jovanis after recovering from a big wheel stand with an 8.80 at 155. Seward put up an 8.48 at 147 over Bloem and Torres would advance over Forsgers with an 8.90 at 152 with Forsgers skying the front wheels again and riding it out near the center line snagging the 330 cone.

The final would be Seward vs. Torres in a nitrous vs turbo battle with Torres doing his job on the tree with an .052 reaction to Seward's very safe .257. At the stripe is would be Seward by the slimmest of margins earning the win, 8.539 at 166 to Torres best of day 8.81 at 152. The Tremek Stick Shift Shootout pitts the quickest two cars in True Street with Jeff Smith (far lane) against Rick Kaknes from VMP against each other with Smith earning the win for the second time in a row earning his Tremek transmission of choice for his efforts. Both racers also compete in a local Stick Shift class at Lakeland Dragstrip hosted by The Stick Shift Mafia group. Jeff’s car has a stock engine with 25,000 miles topped with a VMP 2.3L supercharger on E85 backed by a Tremek Magnum Trans from Astro Performance with a McCloud RTX 1200 clutch and a fully built IRS rear from Maximum Motorsports with Driveshaft Shop Level 5 halfshafts tuned by Justin Starkey at VMP Performance.
VMP Superchargers GT 500 Shootout
The VMP Supercharges GT 500 class had eight cars qualify with Brian Devilbiss driving a 2013 Shelby out of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania earning top qualifier by a wide margin with a 7.52 at 184. Gregory Perez Jr. took second with his 2001 GT500 with the only other seven second pass, a 7.97 at 169. Round one would see four cars with singles as the other half of the field did not make the call, Rick Kaknes and Joseph Behensky were the first pair in round two with Kaknes advancing with a 10.30 despite his off pace reaction. Devilbiss has a single win over Thomas who did not show putting up an 8.16 at 173 setting up the final.

In the final Devilbiss left first with an .068 reaction to Kaknes sleepy .251 who ran a 10.38 at 137 for his efforts but was out horse powered by Devilbiss’ 8.11 at 181 MPH.
Brian has been racing for 27 years in everything from dirt track to ice drags and runs a LMN built engine fed by a Precision 94 MM Gen II turbo in his full interior 2013 Shelby GT 500. Evolution Performance handled the build on the car with help coming from Gulf Racing Fuels and Stroud Safety.
Fluid Turbo Concepts Coyote

Fluid Turbo Concepts Coyote was mostly filled with Florida cars with Melissa Urist, Jermiah Hussey and Ronnie Reynolds coming from out of state. Reynolds took number one qualifier and started things off in round one with a 7.77 at 181 MPH taking out Joey Basile. Tampa’s Sai Li put away Justin Davis and Justin Jordan netted an 8.13 over Jim Braun’s 9.21. Hussey and Brett LaSala would also advance to round two. In round two Hussey improved his performance to a 7,83 over Sai Li, Jordan ran a 7.92 at 175 to earn the win over LaSala and Reynolds had the single with an 8.84. Jordan would have the single to the final to face with Reynolds who put up a 7.86 at 182.
In the final Jordan did his job on the tree with a .082 to Reynolds’ way off .304 and that was all she wrote as Jordan motored on to a 7.74 at 175 earning the win to Reynolds’ 7.78 at 182 MPH run. Jordan’s car is fresh from Pro Fab Performance in New Port Richey with a new gear and some work in the rear with new solid bushings and suspension upgrades to keep things stable for the MPR built powerplant.
Livernois ECO Shootout
Brad Gusler was the top qualifier in the Eco Shootout earning a single in round one where he ripped off a stellar 10.73 at 127. Number two qualifier Bill Putnam faced off with Erik Vogel out of Tampa scoring a win with an 11.42 at 118 to Vogel’s 15.68 at 106. Gusler turned it down to be safe in the second and third round advancing easily over Reginald Maxwell and Jason Justi respectively while Putnam took out Josh Beasley in round two earning the single to the final.

Once there he turned it up upping the jets in the NX nitrous system scoring a 10.87 at 125 and earning the win with Gusler breaking the transmission after he also turned it up finding the weak link in the combo.
Eco Shootout winner Bill Putnam runs a stock engine stock turbo combo out of UPR Products with an NX Nitrous and methanol kit tuned by John Lund with a UPR down pipe and suspension and FFTEC intercooler. His best pass before today was an 11.15 before he turned it up in the final making him the first stock engine/stock turbo car in the tens, weighing in at 3560 pounds that’s quite a feat out of such a small engine.
VP Racing Fuels Street Outlaw
Street Outlaw saw five cars qualify with Dwayne Barbaree taking top qualifier with a 4.39, the only car in the .30’s to date. He had the earned single in round one putting up a 4.47 turned down in the front half in an effort to ensure traction. Vince Palazzolo would advance on a 4.90 with Manny Buginga not moving from the starting line with new car gremlins and Hines putting up a 4.71 over Ronnie Modfather Diaz. Palazzolo would have the bye in round two running a 4.87 at 162 for his effort and Barbaree going right down with Hines spinning after the hit and pedaling to a 4.82 ending his day.

In the final Barbaree and Palazzolo both struck the tires with Barbaree recovering quickly and managing a 5.14 at 154 and the event win on the sun heated surface. Dwayne has been to several finals and won the points championship over at NMCA in the past but this is his first final round appearance and win over here with the NMRA making this one sweet victory for the team.
Edelbrock Renegade
Frank Varela faced off with fellow Hellion Racing team mate Haley James in a little staging duel in round one, amazingly both drivers cut identical .084 reaction times but it would be Varela to the stripe first with a 7.73 at 180 to her 8.18. Dom Didonato ran an 8.40 on an opponent broke single over Aaron Bates with Adam Arndt scoring a 7.54 at 166 on his earned bye before falling to breakage in round two to number four qualifier Alton Clements.

Varela aslo advanced to the final to meet Clements and nailed the tree with a .002 reaction to Clements .114. Clements had work to do and pulled out the win with a 7.647 at 181 to Varela’s 7.78 at 177.
Procharger Coyote Modified
Joe Guertin put up the first seven second pass in competition to go number one and showed it was no fluke at all scoring a 7.89 at 175 on his earned single in round one eliminations today. Jeff Polivka scored an 8.07 in his round win over newcomer Joe Decaria, third and fourth qualifers Johnny Lightning and Joe Cram also moved on to round two where Johnny scored a seven second run of his own to take out Polivka. Guertin was late on the tree against Cram in round two but his 7.91 was plenty to get around the off pace Cram setting up the final with Johnny Lightning.

Once there Guertin was way early with a -.295 reaction ending his day and handing Johnny the win with his 8.01 at 175 MPH.
G-Force Transmissions Pure Street
Number one qualifier William Gimbel took himself out in round one going red against Jimmy Wilson in the first pair out in class. Today would be one of those days for quite a few racers especialy early in eliminations, call if off season rust if you must. Teddy Weaver met with C.J. Reese scoring a win with a 9.60 at 139 and Tommy Godfrey earned his way to round two with a win over Derek Downs giving up lane choice to Weaver who went on to win with a 9.61 to Godfrey’s 9.80.

Wilson took the tree on the single and bested Weaver in the final on the tree with an .063 to Weaver’s .074. Wilson fell off pace however slowing to a 9.97 at 139 and it wasn’t enough to stay out front of Weaver’s 9.62, also at 139.
Race Pages Coyote Stock
Race Pages Coyote Stock had a strong field of cars this weekend with Shane Stymeist earning top qualifier. Micheal Washington was second on the ladder and faced off with Gregory Herbert in round one scoring a win with a 10.27 to Herbert’s 10.61. The always tough Drew Lyons set low ET of the round with a 10.254 at 129 over Charlie Rankin. Carlos Sobrino, Jacob Lamb, Tim Matherly, Darin Hendricks and Joe Marini would advance over their opponents to round two with Stymeist getting the earned single running a10.27 at 128.

Lyons would advance on a red light from Sobrino in round two with Washington and Marini aslo winning their respective matches. Jacob Lamb was low ET for this round, just a touch slower with a 10.257 over Tim Matherly. Washington lit the red bulb in the semi finals taking a loss to Lamb with Lyons showing he was ready for the finals scoring a 10.27 at 129 and the win over Joe Marini.
Lyons had lane choice in the final vs Lamb and he was better on the tree netting a .072 to Lamb’s .149. The cars were tied together going down track with Lamb getting by taking the win, a 10.274 at 129.47 to Lyons 10.376 at 128, a .025 margin of victory.
American Racing Headers Factory Stock
James Meridith qualified number one and backed that up in round one with a 10.627 at 121 snagging the 2016 record early on his earned single. Number two qualifier Matt Amrine was paired with Sondra Leslie who put a tree on his with a .033 to his .161. His 10.71 was quite enough to drive by netting a win and round two berth and bye to the finals. Meredith played it safe against Leslie Jr. scoring a win with a 10.595 at 123.

In the final Meredith was late again with a .183 light to Amrine’s .067 but he again out ran his opponent netting a 10.601 at 123.13 to Amrine’s 10.85 at 125 taking the season opener win.
Detroit Locker Lightning/Trucks

Detroit Locker Lightning/Trucks had a good turnout with twenty one racers vying for the money with Jimmy Cantrell scoring top qualifier in class with his 1994 Ranger. It was not his day as he fell in round two to Jim Roberts out of Largo, Florida. Johnny Lightning was the fast one dialing 8.77, he would make it till round four before going red against Randy Conway’s 84 Ranger. Johnny was also running Coyote Modified and jumped from winning that final directly to the truck which messed with his concentration.
M.J. Smith put up a .009 reaction in his 63 Ranchero against Conway in the final but fell off pace to a 9.59 on his 9.47 dial and taking a loss to Conway who was .021 and just .009 over index.
Roush Super Stang

Roush Super Stang had twelve cars in class this weekend with Marco Ponce Jr. as number one qualifier in his 2012 Boss Mustang. He would score a perfect tree in round one over Shelby Wendel and earning a win over Darrell Bye in a double break out match in round two. Number two qualifier Marvin Knack out of Lexington, Kentucky met with Becki Belcher in round one ending her day of racing. He faced John Golliday in round two who was very late and broke out in a big way trying to catch up.
Knack would advance to the final on a foul start to meet with Ponce going -.003 red himself allowing Marco Ponce Jr. to take the win.
Flex A Lite Open Comp
Flex A Lite Open Comp had enough cars for five round of racing with Steven Daniels from Valdosta, Georgia as the top qualifier. Local racer Hannah Sanders took him out in round two before taking a breakk out loss to Northville, Michigan’s Dennis Corn. In the final Dennis met with Deep Gap, North Carolina based Greg Essen who nailed the tree with a .003 reaction in his 1971 Maverick. Corn would go too fast by .002 playing the stripe giving Essen his first NMRA event win.
