When was it that you first really paid attention to cars? More than just being able to name them, there’s a moment for all of us when we come to a realization that a car is more than just something cool to look at or ride in, that it could become our own. That moment came for Skylor Grubb this past summer and this is his story.
Three years ago Skylor’s older brother had purchased a ’73 Mustang Mach 1for his own son, but that son didn’t like the car, a clogged fuel filter was making it “unreliable” and although ’73 isn’t the most desirable year for classic Mustangs, it’s still a pony car with a 351 Cleveland under the hood, and as we’ve learned all Mustangs have potential if you’re willing to put the time in to end up with a desirable outcome.
Skylor’s brother had parked the Mustang in their father’s barn/shop, which the family had built for storing and working on cars. Having never payed much attention to the old Mustang until this past summer, Skylor and his father decided it would make an ideal father/son project car. Skylor’s older brother had given up on the car, and said his younger brother could have it because he and his father could probably do more with it.
A cleanup, some new wheels and tires, and a tune up has the old ’73 running and looking better than it has in years. Of course 40 years of age take their toll on a car, and right now the Grubbs know the car needs floor pans and rear quarter panels replaced due to rust. We imagine there will be some more work done along the way. The plan is to have the car restored by Skylor’s senior year of high school so he can cruise to the prom in style. We seem to remember hatching plans like that ourselves when we were 15. Good luck Skylor!
