As the demand for cleaner emissions and better fuel economy grow around the globe, it’s easy to see why many car manufacturers introduce groundbreaking innovation. This is especially true when it comes to high-performance vehicles and their engines. So it came as no surprise that the 2018 Ford Mustang GT’s DOHC 5.0-liter V-8 made the Ward’s Automotive 10 Best Engines list for 2018.
Never was there a story of more woe, than this of WardsAuto and the five-oh. — James Amend, Wards Auto
The 2018 Mustang GT’s dual-fuel, 460-horsepower 5.0 engine is not only powerful, but when paired with its optional 10-speed automatic transmission creates one of the most fuel-efficient naturally aspirated performance vehicles to date.
The Ward’s Automotive judges spent time behind the wheel of a 2018 Mustang GT equipped with the 10-speed automatic transmission and the optional active-valve performance exhaust for the test. According to Wards Auto Editor Dave Ziola, the active exhaust was “A symphony, particularly in Sport mode.”
In fact, the judges were quick to point out just how excited they were with the redesign of the V-8 engine.
“One final note, or quote, should emissions regulations take engines like this away from us: ‘Never was there a story of more woe, than this of WardsAuto and the five-oh,'” Judge James Amend said.
Ford’s decision to move to dual-fuel arrangement, combining high-pressure direct injection and lower-pressure port injection applications has proven a smart move, and the Gen 3 Coyote is the most impressive 5.0-liter engine we’ve seen thus far. Making the Ward’s Automotive Top 10 gives us hope that the advancements in technology that the team at Ford continues making will keep its Pony car V-8 alive and well for years to come.
