One thing we don’t know for sure yet about the 2018 Mustang GT is the official out put rating of its new dual-fuel Coyote 5.0-liter engine. Or do we?
Keeping a secret in the Internet era is a major challenge (just ask the government), but keeping up with the Internet in print is even tougher. Sometimes that means publications get information early and are asked to sit on it for a while. Sometimes it means they make an educated guess and call it an estimate. Case in point is the possible revelation of the 2018 Mustang GT’s horsepower and torque output.
The September 2017 issue of Motor Trend features an expansive new car buyer’s guide cover story, and in its Mustang listing on page 52 are the horsepower ratings for the EcoBoost 2.3-liter, 5.0-liter, 5.2 liter, and and yet unverified, supercharged 5.0-liter engine. A photo of this page showed up on Reddit and it makes you wonder.

The September 2017 issue of Motor Trend features some intriguing “estimates” for the 2018 Mustang engine lineup’s output.
What’s interesting is that listings have asterisks next to them indication that they are estimates. The 5.0-liter engine’s purported 450 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque does sound mighty promising. Moreover, the mysterious supercharged 5.0-liter features an estimated rating of 680 horsepower and 630 lb-ft of torque. This would seem to confirm that the next GT500 will be supercharged, but interestingly this the first time we have seen its Predator engine listed at only 5.0 liters.
So, did the magazine writers have an inside track or did they just take an educated guess and hope go attract a little attention (like this) from these Mustang engine output ratings? Time will tell, but color us intrigued.
UPDATE: The official 2018 Mustang GT horsepower and torque numbers were revealed and the MT estimate was conservative by 10 horsepower. Check out the full details here.
