The turbo system manufacturers are waging a war to see who has the fastest 2011-’14 Coyote-powered Mustang GT. It seems every week we hear of a lower elapsed time from someone, and this latest news from Blow By-Racing customer Bret Stabler tells us this isn’t going to end anytime soon.
Bret bought his 2011 Mustang GT California Special new in December of that year. “I did some research and found Blow-By Racing and the relationship began,” Stabler says. Since he had previously owned a Terminator Cobra, he was a fan of roots-style superchargers. BBR’s Chris Jones was able to talk Stabler into a Hellion Power Systems single turbo. The guys wanted to do a twin kit, but at that time Hellion only had a single turbo kit available. However, Stabler did upgrade to the optional Precision 76mm ball-bearing turbocharger.
In the build’s early stages, engine reliability of the stock Coyote bottom end proved to hinder any real power production. However, an upgrade to a Ford GT block with Oliver billet rods, Diamond pistons with Total Seal rings, a billet oil pump gear, and all ARP hardware, built by MPR’s Tim Eichorn took care of any short block issues. Around the same time as the short block upgrade, Hellion introduced its twin-turbocharger kit. The single kit was exchanged for the Hellion twin kit, and “We finally had the winning combination,” Stabler says.
The rear suspension is full of QA1 shocks, BMR and Blow By-Racing upgrades, Ford Racing 3.55 gears with a Strange Engineering spool and 35-spline axles. An FTI Powerglide with a PTC converter transfers power to the built rear. The 3,700 pound GT/CS responded to all this hard work with an 8.68 at 159 mph. Stabler ran the number using Mickey Thompson’s ET Street Radial Pro with Weld Racing wheels at each corner.
The car’s attention to detail and performance are a testament to the crew over at BBR. With 8.60s in the book in a car that looks pretty stock from the outside, and is still packed full of street equipment, we have to wonder if Stabler will be content with his times, or once again enlist BBR to help him go even faster.
