Chances are if you read the content here you’re a Mustang fan. We’d love to say that all the time our favorite pony car out sells it’s competition. However, we have to admit that for about four years the Mustang has been lagging behind it’s number one competitor, the Chevy Camaro, in terms of new cars rolling off dealer lots.
That has all changed though, in the month of June. As summer officially kicked off, Mustang sales have officially kicked into high gear. The Mustang didn’t just beat the Camaro in June, it smoked it, outselling it’s competition by a margin of over 22 percent with the Camaro selling just over 7,200 units. to the Mustangs’s over 9,200 units. This is the first time in the past year Mustang sales have been so high, in fact last June was the last time Mustang sales were so good.
With the S197 platform in it’s final year, some perspective buyers are likely getting in now on what is likely the best of the platform, with more options, equipment, and tech than ever before making it’s way to the Mustang. Meanwhile potential Camaro buyers may be lying in wait, anticipating the release of the slightly refreshed 2014 Model which is due to go on sale later this summer. If the Mustang continues this streak as Camaro supplies, dwindle, Ford’s pony car could top Camaro sales for the first time annually in four years.
We might even go as far as speculating that the sales numbers are part of why Ford has not released any major details, or images of the 2015 Mustang. Looking to capitalize on the current car’s better than ever popularity Ford may be hesitant to show it’s full hand yet. New models on the horizon often cannibalize the current model’s sales, often leading to poor final year sales for old models.
A win though is a win, and we can only hope that more Ford fans make their way to the dealer showrooms for the next six months than GM fans, to give the Mustang a sales lead for the entire calendar year. Only time will tell.
