The Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix’s Pirelli World Challenge rounds five and six were held this past weekend, and Westland, Michigan’s Dean Martin took the checkered flag as a pair of Mustangs finished in the top two spots in a hard-fought race.
Martin drives the Number 50 Picture Cars East/Rehagen Racing Mustang BOSS 302S and took home the win for the second race in a row, holding off Tony Buffomante’s Number 33 Capaldi Racing/Ford Racing BOSS 302S by 2.124 seconds as the flag dropped. Martin and Alec Udell in the Number 17 Watson Racing Boss 302S led the event for the first thirteen laps, leaving the rest of the field to battle it out.
Mark Wilkins, driving the Number 38 Kia Motors Kia Optima, Jack Roush Jr in the Number 60 ROUSH Road Racing Boss 302R, and Jack Baldwin in the Number 73 RESET-MD/StopTech/Motul Porsche Cayman S rounded out the GTS field in the hard-fought race. Roush, Jr. and Baldwin made contact in Turn 8, which knocked Roush, Jr. out of the race and ultimately ended the event under the yellow caution flag, for the second time.
Buffomante’s second-place finish put him on the podium for the second time in 2014 and gave him his fourth top-five finish of the season.
The points standings for 2014 have Jack Baldwin at the top with Mark Wilkins, Dean Martin, Nic Jonsson and Tony Buffomante rounding out the top five spots. Kia currently leads the manufacturers points chase with 31 points; Ford is a close second with 29 points with five events and ten rounds to go.
