Two weeks ago the 2014 NMRA season launched with the 20th annual Spring Break Shootout in Bradenton, Florida. Many racers enjoyed a reprieve from the brutal winter that has hammered much of the USA, and we watched in awe as records were shattered on the super sticky track surface all weekend long.
Several classes in the NMRA favor stick shift racers, and one of the originals is Pure Street. Coming back after a one year hiatus with revised rules, Pure Street should provide plenty of high rpm, wheel standing action all year long.
By the end of the weekend Pure Street came down to racers, Teddy Weaver and Jimmy Wilson in the final round. Both veterans behind the wheel, and both running a SPEC clutch in the bellhousing.
It’s that SPEC clutch and flywheel combination that make for some of those lightning fast shifts and high winding action in these two cars. SPEC has been part of the Pure Street game for years, providing lightweight clutch components, with incredible clamping power. NMRA specifies that in Pure Street the clutch must be a single disc, diaphragm style clutch.
The crew at SPEC are experts in matching clutch components to a specific application whether it’s for a street going ride, or in this case a full on race car. They’re also continually performing R&D and developing new clutch technologies.
There’s no doubt that lurking within the bell housing of any SPEC equipped racer is a well thought out clutch system that provides high levels of power handling capability, with a pedal effort that racers can rely on to allow for those fast paced shifts. Of course exactly what makes up those combinations is strictly top secret between the racers and their SPEC representative.
Left: Weaver. Right: Wilson
At the end of the spring break shootout the Pure Street final came down to Wilson vs Weaver. Although Wilson cut the better light at the tree he was no match for Weaver who had a dominating presence in the class all weekend long. Weaver ran out an impressive 9.753 ET at 137.44 MPH to Wilson’s 10.02 at 133.98. Look for these racers to continue duking it out all season long in Pure Street. Whether you’re looking to upgrade your street going Mustang’s clutch, doing an engine swap, or building a racer, be sure to check out SPEC for your clutch needs.
