Yokohama Geolandar X-AT: Everything You Need To Know

Yokohama Geolandar X-AT: Everything You Need To Know

Founded in 1917, Yokohama is no stranger to the world of tire production. The Japanese tire company manufactures its product in Virginia and Mississippi, with the Geolandar X-AT being produced in the 1.2 million square-foot Salem, Virginia, facility.

We sat down with Fardad Niknam, Yokohama Tire Senior Director of Consumer Product Planning and Product Marketing, to ask him about the Geolandar X-AT, and what Ford vehicles it would best be suited for.

Q: The Yokohama Geolandar X-AT is built for SUVs and trucks. Is this tire best for street/daily driven vehicles, or more intended for off-road designated vehicles, or perhaps a combination of the two? Can you explain why?

A: The Geolandar X-AT was created for customers who feel a traditional mud terrain tire is too aggressive and perhaps noisy for their truck, and believe an all-terrain tire might offer lower noise, but the appearance is simply not aggressive enough.

So, we designed the Geolandar X-AT as a way to provide a low-level of noise similar to our Geolandar A/T G015, but with an aggressive pattern and sidewall design to meet the appearance needs of an extreme all-terrain tire. For that reason, the customers who want a daily street-driving experience, as well as an aggressive look, would be the right customers for the tire. The off-road capability of the X-AT is best in class, offering excellent traction on rocks, gravel, and mud, along with outstanding durability.

Q: The Geolandar X-AT is listed as an all-season tire. Are all-season tires a fit for most vehicles in most locations? Should our readers in locations with more extreme weather consider an alternative?

A: The Geolandar X-AT is an all-season tire with a superb level of snow performance. For customers who occasionally drive in snowy conditions, this tire is perfect. For longer periods of cold weather or slightly heavier snow, we would recommend our Geolandar A/T G015, which is marked with the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol indicating its winter performance capabilities.  Of course, for more extreme winter conditions, often found across the north with heavy snow or ice, then dedicated winter products such Yokohama’s iceGUARD G075 would be the best option.

Q: The Yokohama Promise includes a 45,000-mile limited tread ware guarantee. What does this include exactly?

A: In addition to the standard limited warranty coverage, any Geolandar X-AT purchased in the continental United States as a replacement tire carries a 45,000-mile treadwear warranty for up to five years (60 months) from the installation date. This warranty excludes any tire used in commercial applications.

Q: How does the Geolandar X-AT’s tread pattern lend itself to superior off-road performance? How does it perform in mud, dirt, and sand?

A: The unique block arrangement and compound of the Geolandar X-AT lend it to perform both on-road, as well as off-road. The tire has been tested against a leading competitor by a commissioned third-party organization for sand traction, as well asfor off-road wear capabilities. The X-AT outperformed the competitor by 3% for sand traction and more than 20% for off-road wear. The off-road capability of the X-AT and quiet manner on-road, provides consumers withan option that didn’t exist before.

Q: Finally, how can our readers go about figuring out what size will fit best on their Ford vehicle?

A: Tire size information can be always found on the placard inside of the driver’s side door. If your readers are looking to upgrade to different size/wheel, they should consult Ford or a shop that specializes in upsizing.

There you have it folks! The Geolandar X-AT is a great option for a wide variety of Ford trucks and SUVs, with a combination of off-road and on-road ability, all-season drivability, and a solid warranty. Plus, you can’t argue with the fact that it looks badass on this Raptor!
