Most SVT-massaged Ford products are hits, but it seems like the SVT Raptor is one that is simply out of the ballpark. The high powered, off-road inspired truck is selling well these days, despite the price of gasoline marching ever north of insanity.

Ford SVT spokesman Henry Platt told the folks over at PickupTrucks.com that Ford sold 1,183 Raptor pickup trucks in April. Platt added that eighty percent of Raptor sales were the new SuperCrew model and that black was the most popular color.

PickupTrucks.com also points out that Raptor sales exceed those of the Honda Ridgeline by well over two hundred units, based on figures reported at month-end by Honda. The two models of course are not comparable, but the irony lies in Honda’s initial expectations that the Ridgeline would be selling at a rate of 50,000 yearly.

The 6.2-liter V-8 Raptor delivers 411 hp and carries EPA ratings of 11/14 mpg city/highway. By comparison, the Ridgeline’s 250 hp, 3.5-liter V6 is rated at 15/20 mpg. While neither’s performance in this area is spectacular, it appears that Ridgeline sales need more help than the EPA can provide.

Even from the beginning, order rates for the SVT Raptor have been gratifying to the company, with luxury options being added to almost 80 percent of all deliveries.
